YANKS, A'S SPLIT WILD TWINBILL
Zernial's 3 HRs, 9 RBIs Pace Philly in Nightcap
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 12 (AP) - Gus Zernial belted three home runs and drove in
nine in the nightcap as the Philadelphia A's salvaged a high-scoring
doubleheader split with the New York Yankees at Shibe Park. The Athletics
won game two 24-12, setting a new major league high for runs in a single game in
the process. The Yankees had held the previous high mark with a 23-2
pasting of the St. Louis Browns on May 5. Zernial's nine runs batted in
represent a new single-game high as well. The previous mark (7) had been
held by five different players.
Philadelphia held a 7-2 lead after the second inning in game two. After
spotting the Yankees a pair of first inning runs and scoring once themselves in
the opening frame, the A's exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second
with Zernial capping the scoring on a one-out grand slam off reliever Spec Shea.
But the Yankees, improbably, roared back with seven runs in the top of the
third, driving starter Bobby Shantz from the game in the process. The
first six batters of the inning all reached base safely and New York ultimately
sent 11 batters to the plate.
The Yankees made it 10-7 with a single run in the top of the fourth but, just
when it appeared that New York was headed for a doubleheader sweep, the A's
seized the lead with a five-run bottom of the fourth. All five of the runs
were unearned as a result of a two-out error on third baseman Bobby Brown.
Philadelphia added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to all but seal
the contest; Allie Clark popped a two-run home run to chase Shea from the mound
and Zernial greeted reliever Stubby Overmire with his second home run of the
game--a solo shot--to put the A's ahead 15-10.
The Yankees cut the deficit to three runs in the eighth on consecutive
run-scoring extra base hits off the bats of Johnny Mize and Hank Bauer but the
A's decisively slammed the door shut by sending 12 batters to the plate and
scoring nine runs in the bottom of the inning. Zernial hit his third home
run of the game--a three-run blast--and Pete Suder added a two-run shot of his
own to cap Philadelphia's scoring.
New York scored a couple of consolation runs in the top of the ninth but it
wasn't nearly enough.
In the opener, the Athletics ran out to a four-run lead through five innings but
the Yankees, who had done nothing against starter Bob Hooper, tied the game in
the top of the sixth on back-to-back-to-back home runs from Hank Bauer (a three
run bomb), Phil Rizzuto and pitcher Tom Morgan. It was just the third time
all year that a team had hit home runs in three consecutive plate appearances.
Philadelphia reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth
but the Yankees decisively overcame the deficit by scoring six times in the top
of the seventh. 12 batters came to the plate with the first six reaching
safely.
That was essentially the ball game. New York did add a meaningless run in
the top of the ninth. Philadelphia never seriously threatened against
reliever Joe Ostrowski who fired 3 2/3 innings of shutout ball on a day that was
not at all friendly to pitchers.
