RED HOT TRIBE WINS 8TH STRAIGHT
Wynn Fires CG 4-Hitter
CLEVELAND, Aug. 11 (AP) - Early Wynn surrendered a single unearned run, tossing
his major league leading 18th complete game, as the Cleveland Indians whipped
Chicago White Sox, 4-1, for their eighth consecutive victory. Wynn, who
leads the AL in earned run average, won his third straight start in his sixth
consecutive complete game, improving his record to 13-9 in the process.
The White Sox pushed across their only run of the game in the very first
inning. Wynn clipped Chico Carrasquel with a pitch to open the game and
Nellie Fox followed by looping a single to left. Minnie Minoso's fielder's
choice left runners at first and third with one out and Carrasquel scored when
Eddie Robinson's grounder to third was booted by the drawn in Al Rosen at
third. The official scorer's decision was that Carrasquel held at third
until the ball got past Rosen, making the run unearned. Wynn avoided
further damage and then shut Chicago out the rest of the way.
Cleveland tied the game in the third off White Sox starter Joe Dobson without
the benefit of the hit. With two outs, Dobson walked Dale Mitchell, Bobby
Avila and Larry Doby to fill the bases. A subsequent 3-1 pitch to Luke
Easter missed, forcing in a run. Al Rosen flied out to end the frame.
The Indians then took the lead for good with three fourth inning runs.
Harry Simpson led off with a double to the gap in right-center field and Ray
Boone drew a base on balls. Jim Hegan's weak grounder to short moved the
runners to second and third with one out. Wynn then helped himself with a
run-scoring fly out to left and Mitchell broke the game open with a home run
over the center field fence, putting Cleveland on top 4-1.
That capped the scoring. The White Sox had their best scoring chance in
the seventh when Ray Coleman led off with a single and Jim Busby followed with a
walk. But Wynn rose to the occasion, retiring Phil Masi, pinch hitter
Floyd Baker and Carrasquel in order without the ball leaving the infield.
The eight-game winning streak is the longest in the American League thus far
this season.
