REDS EXTEND PHILS' LOSING STREAK TO 10
Howell, McMillan Rap 3 Hits
CINCINNATI, July 31 (AP) - The tough times continue for the Philadelphia
Phillies. Reds starter Howie Fox fired a complete game and Dixie Howell
and Roy McMillan knocked out three hits apiece as Cincinnati cruised to an 8-1
victory at Crosley Field. Perhaps the most ominous sign for the Phillies
is that all ten losses in the current streak have come at the hands of the teams
with the three worst records in the National League. Philadelphia hasn't
won a game since tripping the Chicago Cubs in the first game of a doubleheader
on July 22. The Cubs won the nightcap and the Phillies haven't seen a
"W" since.
Fox (4-9) spotted Philadelphia a lead in the first inning when Dick Sisler's fly
ball to left scored Eddie Waitkus, but Fox proved stingy from that point on.
Phillies starter Bubba Church held the Reds scoreless until the fifth, when
Cincinnati tied the game. McMillan led off the inning with a double.
One out later, Bobby Adams lined an infield single off Church's shin, leaving
runners at first and third. Connie Ryan's RBI fielder's choice evened the
score at one.
The Reds seized full control of the game in the sixth. Ted Kluszewski led
off with a single. Harry Edwards followed by dumping a single of his own
into shallow right, giving Cincinnati runners at first and second. Lloyd
Merriman's deep fly to center advanced Kluszewski to third and Dixie Howell
doubled to the left-center field gap, scoring Kluszewski and chasing Edwards to
third. McMillan doubled past first baseman Waitkus, scoring both runners
and capping the inning's scoring with the Reds on top, 4-1.
The Reds sealed the game in the seventh with four more runs on a run-scoring
single off the bat of Edwards, a two-run triple by Howell and McMillan's third
hit of the contest, a run-scoring single.
The Phillies threatened to get back in the game in the top of the ninth, loading
the bases with one out, but Fox wiggled out of trouble, securing his fifth
complete game of the season.
Philadelphia looks to break its losing skein tomorrow against the Reds at
Crosley Field.
