LAST PLACE CUBS GET WELL AT EXPENSE OF SLUMPING PHILS
DH Sweep Completes 4-Game Whitewash
CHICAGO, July 29 (AP) - Having dropped nine of their last 11 games, the Chicago
Cubs entered a four-game series at home against the Philadelphia Phillies in
last place, a league-worst 27 games below .500. But after winning both
games of a doubleheader at Wrigley Field, the Cubs completed a four-game sweep
of the Phillies. Philadelphia finds itself mired in a season-worst
eight-game losing streak and now stands 14 1/2 games behind the NL leading
Brooklyn Dodgers.
The opener was a pitcher's duel between Robin Roberts of the Phillies, the
National League leader in wins with 16, and Chicago's Paul Minner.
Philadelphia threatened to break the scoreless tie in the fourth when Willie
Jones led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a Del Ennis
single. Tommy Brown's bunt attempt was caught in the air by Minner for the
first out, but Granny Hamner blooped a single to right to fill the bases.
But Minner induced Eddie Pellagrini to ground into a third-to-home force and
fanned Andy Seminick to end the frame without allowing a run to score.
The Cubs finally broke through in the sixth. Back-to-back singles by Smoky
Burgess and Randy Jackson with one out left runners at first and second.
Gene Hermanski's sharp single to right filled the bases and Roy Smalley's
squibber to the right side went for an infield hit, scoring Burgess and putting
Chicago on top, 1-0. Minner's slow roller to first produced the second out
but it also brought home Jackson with the second run. Eddie Miksis
grounded out to end the inning, but the Cubs led 2-0.
The Phillies promptly cut into the lead in the seventh. Seminick led off
with a double past first baseman Phil Cavarretta. Roberts bounced out,
moving Seminick to third and Eddie Waitkus' grounder to first scored Seminick to
cut the Chicago lead to a single run.
Philadelphia finally drew even in the top of the ninth. Minner walked
Pellagrini and Seminick walked. Roberst attempted to bunt the runners to
second and third but failed, and ultimately struck out. Waitkus lined to
right but Richie Ashburn lofted a single to left-center, scoring Pellagrini to
tie the game. Jones flied out to end the inning.
But in the bottom of the inning, the Cubs won it. With one out, Miksis
lined a single over Roberts head into center field. Cavarretta grounded a
single into right, chasing Miksis to third. With the infield in, Bob
Ramazzotti laced a hit to left-center field. Miksis jogged home with the
winning run, making Roberts a loser for just the sixth time in 22 decisions.
The nightcap contained far less drama. The Cubs scored seven ties in the
first two innings off Phillies starter Jocko Thompson, with Hank Sauer's two
home runs and five runs batted in doing most of the damage. Thompson
settled down and the Cubs didn't score again, but Chicago starter Bob Rush held
Philadelphia to single runs in the first and third innings and cruised to a 7-2
victory.
It was Sauer's fifth multi-homer game of the season, tying him with Wally
Westlake for the most in major league baseball this year.
Rush's victory--just his fourth of the year against 12 defeats--was his first
since June 19, breaking a personal five-start losing streak.
