Indians Miscues Aid Yanks' Cause
NEW YORK, July 26 (AP) - Allie Reynolds fired a one-hitter and New York scored
three runs in the sixth en route to a 3-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians
before nearly 35,000 at Yankee Stadium. Reynolds became just the fourth
major league pitcher--all American Leaguers--to a throw a complete game
one-hitter this season. Larry Doby's two-out run-scoring single in the top
of the sixth inning was the only Cleveland safety of the contest.
It's been a struggle at time this year for Reynolds (7-5), who entered the game
with an earned run average of 4.44 and consecutive no-decisions in starts
against the White Sox and Browns. But the Yankees right-hander was
undeniably sharp throughout this outing.
The Indians, meanwhile, wasted a fairly effective start by Bob Feller (6-9), who
had to try to overcome four errors by his teammates. The attempt was
unsuccessful.
The game was scoreless through the first five innings. Cleveland managed a
pair of two-out baserunners in the fourth when Doby walked and Luke Easter
reached on Phil Rizzuto's error, but Reynolds retired Al Rosen on a fly to
center to end the threat. New York's best scoring opportunity came in the
bottom of the same inning. Gene Woodling reached on Ray Boone's error to
open the frame and, two outs later, Johnny Mize doubled to right-center, putting
runners on second and third. But Feller induced Cliff Mapes to pop up to
catcher Jim Hegan.
The game was decided in the sixth inning. In the top half, Reynolds walked
Feller to open the inning and Dale Mitchell sacrificed him to second.
Bobby Avila flied to Joe DiMaggio in center, but Larry Doby broke up the
no-hitter and the shutout by lining a clean single over the head of Mize at
first, scoring Feller and putting the Indians in front, 1-0. Reynolds then
fanned Easter to end the inning.
The Yankees came right back in the home half of the sixth. Gil McDougald
drew a lead off walk and Woodling bounced a single through the box to put
runners on first and second. DiMaggio then blooped a single just inside
the left field line. McDougald beat Mitchell's throw to the plate to tie
the game Woodling and DiMaggio each moved up a base--to third and second
respectively--on the throw. Yogi Berra's fly to right was deep enough to
score Woodling, making it 2-1, and advance DiMaggio to third. The
Cleveland defense then fell apart completely, and it was enough to allow a third
Yankees run to score. Mize popped a foul ball to the left side that Al
Rosen moved under and dropped for an error. Feller came back to strike
Mize out anyway, but Mapes' grounder to Rosen, which should have ended the
inning, was kicked by the Indians third baseman for another error, allowing
DiMaggio to score an unearned run and put the Yankees on top 3-1.
The Indians never seriously threatened to score again. Reynolds allowed
only one baserunner in the final three innings--a two-out walk to Mitchell in
the eighth, while fanning three over the same stretch. For the game,
Reynolds struck out eight Cleveland batters.
The win puts New York in first place by two games, pending the outcome of
Chicago's matchup with Boston at Fenway Park.
