CHURCH FIRES 2ND STRAIGHT 2-HITTER
Phils Whip Reds in First of Two
PHILADELPHIA, July 18 (AP) - Bubba Church took a no-hitter into the eighth
inning before settling for a two-hit complete game as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 7-1, in the first game of a doubleheader at Shibe
Park. It was the second consecutive complete game two-hitter for Church,
who turned the trick on July 14 in a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh
Pirates. Church joins Ewell Blackwell of the Reds as the only two pitchers
in major league baseball with more than one complete game two-hitter this
season.
Church held the Reds hitless until Virgil Stallcup tripled into the right-center
field gap with one out in the eighth inning, failing in his bid to join Sal
Maglie of the New York Giants on the exclusive list of pitchers with no-hitters
in 1951. Some excellent defense from Church's teammates had kept the
no-hitter intact. Del Ennis made a tremendous grab of Joe Adcock's deep
fly to left with one out in the fifth, snaring the ball juat as he met the
wall. Richie Ashburn's diving grab of Johhny Wyrostek's line drive to
center leading off the eighth preserved the no-no as well.
The Phillies methodically built up a substantial advantage, removing the
pressure from Church.
In the very first inning, Philadelphia scored a run on Willie Jones' fielder's
choice. In the fourth, Tommy Brown led off with a double off Reds starter
Willie Ramsdell (4-12) and Del Ennis clubbed his tenth home run of the season,
giving the Phillies a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth Andy Seminick's two-out single scored Ennis with the fourth run of
the game.
In the eighth, the Phillies blew the game open against reliever Bud Byerly.
With one out, Granny Hamner singled and was driven home by Andy Pellagrini's
triple. Seminick added the coup de grace with a two-run homer into the
lower left field stands, capping Philadelphia's scoring at seven runs.
The Reds broke the shutout in the ninth on Ted Kluszewski's fielder's choice,
but it was far too little too late.
