WOODLING'S NIGHTCAP CYCLE KEYS YANKS MOTOR CITY SWEEP
Winning Streak Reaches 5; N.Y. Retains 1st Place
DETROIT, July 15 (AP) - Gene Woodling became the first player in the major
leagues this season to hit for the cycle and the New York Yankees whipped the
Detroit Tigers 11-5 in the nightcap, punctuating a doubleheader sweep at Briggs
Stadium. The Yankees won the opener, 6-1, as Bob Kuzava took a no-hitter
into the sixth inning, settling for a complete game five-hitter. The pair
of victories extended New York's winning streak to five games and kept the club
in first place in the American League. Second place Chicago remains 1/2
game behind following a sweep of it's own over Philadelphia. For the day,
Woodling went 7-for-11 with four extra base hits--including two home runs--and
five runs scored.
In the opener, the Yankees scored single runs in the fourth and sixth inning's
on run-scoring singles off the bats of Yogi Berra and Woodling, respectively.
Kuzava held the Tigers hitless until Jerry Lipon's harmless single with two outs
in bottom of the sixth.
The 2-0 lead remained intact until the top of the eighth when New York blew the
game open. Gil McDougald led off with a single and then Berra doubled him
to third. Detroit starter Fred Hutchinson was lifted in favor of Hal White
in what proved to be a fatal move. Woodling drove a White offering into
the lower grandstand in left for a three-run homer and Joe Collins followed with
a solo shot to right, giving the Yankees a commanding 6-0 advantage.
Kuzava lost his shutout in the ninth inning when pinch hitter Pat Mullin and
Johnny Lipon slapped consecutive singles to start the frame and the Tigers
scored their only run of the contest Jerry Priddy's RBI ground ball.
Both teams scored early in the nightcap; the game was tied at two after a pair
of innings. But the Yankees kept right on scoring while the Tigers' bats
entered hibernation.
Woodling led off the game with a triple and scored one out later on McDougald's
grounder to short. Detroit evened the score in the bottom of the first on
Don Kryhoski's RBI single. Hank Bauer's 18th home run of the year to open
the second put New York back on top by a run, but Lipon's single in the bottom
half drove home pitcher Gene Bearden to knot the game at two.
Bearden retired the first two Yankees in the third, but a two-out rally gave New
York the lead for good. McDougald singled and Berra walked and Johnny Mize
homered just inside the right field foul pole, making the score 5-2.
The Yankees drove Bearden from the game in the fifth. Mize singled with
one out and Bauer belted his second home run of the contest to put New York
ahead 7-2. That was the end of Bearden's day; the left-hander was replaced
by Marlin Stuart.
Woodling, who had singled in a scoreless fourth inning, led off the sixth with
his second home run of the day. The New York left fielder completed the
cycle in the seventh as the Yankees seized complete control of the
contest. Mize walked and Bauer singled. Jackie Jensen and Jerry
Coleman were retired, but pitcher Wayne Morgan singled to fill the bases.
Woodling then doubled to right-center, scoring two runs, with Morgan coming home
on a throwing error by Priddy. It was now 11-2 and the game was all but
over.
Hoot Evers and Joe Ginsberg homered in the eighth and ninth innings respectively
for Detroit, but the the three runs that scored were merely of the consolation
variety.
