13-RUN 1ST INNING KEYS CHISOX ROUT
Pound Browns 16-3; Busby Drives in 6
ST. LOUIS, July 8 (AP) - In the final major league game prior to the All-Star
break, the Chicago White Sox scored 13 runs in the first inning and went on to
pound the St. Louis Browns, 16-3, at Sportsman's Park. 13 runs is the
largest single-inning tally in the big leagues this year, surpassing the an
11-run sixth inning by the New York Yankees on June 6--also against the Browns
at Sportsman's Park.
The White Sox sent 18 batters to the plate in the first inning. Every
player in the lineup had at least one hit, except for pitcher Billy Pierce who
was responsible for the second and third outs. Bob Dillinger led off with
a single against Browns starter Tommy Byrne. After Nellie Fox flied out,
the parade of baserunners started. Minnie Minoso doubled over the head of
center fielder Ray Coleman, scoring Dillinger with the first run. Eddie
Robinson then drew a walk, and Don Leonhardt followed with a base on balls of
his own to fill the bases. Jim Busby then doubled into the left field
corner, scoring two and chasing Leonhardt to third. Gus Niarhos singled to
left scoring Leonhardt and Busby, making it 5-0. Chico Carrasquel's double
into the left field gap, driving in Niarhos from first.
At this point, the White Sox had plated six runs, and they were still less than
halfway through the inning's tallies. Pierce flied to left with the second
out. Dillinger then drove a triple to right-center, scoring Carrasquel.
Fox followed with a double to left center which scored Dillinger, for the eighth
run of the inning. That was the end of the day for Byrne. He was
replaced by Bill Kennedy. Minoso picked up his second hit of the inning,
one of the infield variety, which moved Fox to third. Robinson doubled to
left which scored Fox and advanced Minoso to third. Leonhardt's single to
left, scoring Minoso and moving Robinson to third. Busby then homered just
inside the left field foul pole and it was 13-0, giving Busby five RBIs in the
inning. A single by Niarhos and a walk to Carrasquel brought Pierce to the
plate as the 18th hitter of the inning, meaning the Browns had batted around
twice. Pierce popped to short and the inning finally came to an end.
The game was never in doubt after the top of the first inning. The White
Sox extended their lead to 14-0 in the second when Robinson singled home Minoso
with an unearned run. The Browns plated two in the second on run-scoring
ground outs by Jim Delsing and Hank Arft. But the White Sox got both runs
back in the fourth, one on a solo home run by Fox and the other on an RBI-triple
off the bat of Busby. The game's final tally was scored in by the Browns
in the eighth on another Delsing ground out.
Busby finished the game with six runs batted in and missed hitting for the cycle
when he failed to single, after doubling, homering and tripling in his first
three plate appearances.
