SWEEP OF GIANTS EXTENDS DODGERS LEAD TO 12 1/2

BROOKLYN, N.Y., July 4 (AP) - Irv Palica fired a four-hit shutout in the opener
and Ralph Branca tossed a six-hit complete game and fanned eight as the Brooklyn
Dodgers swept a doubleheader, 5-0 and 3-1, from the New York Giants before a
sellout holiday crowd of 32,394 at Ebbets Field. The sweep extends
Brooklyn's winning streak to five.
Palica (3-1) struggled with his control in game one, walking six, but still
outpitched hard luck Giants starter Sal Maglie (7-8). It was Palica's
first complete game--and first shutout, obviously--of the season.
The Dodgers scored the only run they would need in the very first inning when
Carl Furillo reached first on shortstop Alvin Dark's error, advanced to second
on a walk to Pee Wee Reese, moved to third on Duke Snider's bloop single to
center and scored when Jackie Robinson grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.
Brooklyn then added some cushion in the third. Furillo again reached to
being the frame, lining a single to right. Reese's hit-and-run ground out
moved Furillo to second and Snider's double into the right field corner brought
home the second run of the game. Robinson walked and Andy Pafko's infield
hit loaded the bases with one out. Maglie struck out Gil Hodges but Rube
Walker came through with a single through the box, scoring Snider and Robinson
to give the Dodgers a 4-0 lead.
Brooklyn capped the scoring in the eighth on Furillo's two-out RBI single, which
scored Billy Cox.
Palica, meanwhile, was keeping the Giants at bay. New York loaded the
bases with two outs in the third but Willie Mays flied to right to end the
threat. The only other real scoring chance for the Giants came in the
sixth. Trailing 4-0 at the time, Dark led off with a single and, one out
later, advanced to third on Don Mueller's looping single that fell just inside
the left field foul line. Whitey Lockman lined out to center, with the
runners holding and Monte Irvin walked to fill the bases. But Ray Noble's
routine fly to left extinguished the threat. The Giants never advanced a
runner past first base for the duration of the game.
The nightcap was more closely contested. The game remained scoreless until
the top of the fifth when Irvin led off with his 14th home run of the year.
The Dodgers took a lead they would not relinquish in the bottom of the
sixth. Robinson drew a leadoff walk from Giants starter Dave Koslo (3-6)
Pafko followed with his fifth home run since being acquired from the Cubs, and
15th overall, halfway up the left field grandstand for a 2-1 Brooklyn advantage.
New York reliever Al Gettel surrendered an insurance run in the bottom of the
eighth when Roy Campanella drew a two-out free pass and scored on Cox's booming
double off the center field fence.
Branca (8-1) retired 15 of the final 18 batters he faced, never allowing a
runner past first base.
The Dodgers are simply running roughshod over the rest of the National
League. Since holding a five-game lead at the end of May, Brooklyn has
more than doubled its advantage while winning 25 of 33 games since the beginning
of June.
