Phils HRs Beat Braves
PHILADELPHIA, June 26 (AP) - The Phillies snapped a 2-2 tie in the bottom of
third inning on consecutive home runs off the bats of Del Ennis, Willie Jones
and Granny Hamner and went on to beat the Boston Braves 8-4 at Shibe Park.
This was the first time this season that a National League team hit three
consecutive home runs and only the second time in the major leagues. The
Boston Red Sox (Walt Dropo, Bobby Doerr and Bill Wight) hit three straight home
runs in the eighth inning of a 7-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox on May 16.
Philadelphia scored first, pushing a pair of runs across the plate in the bottom
of the first inning. Richie Ashburn doubled with one out and Roy
Hartsfield's wild throw on Bill Nicholson's grounder allowed Ashburn to score
and Nicholson to take second. Consecutive singles by Ennis and Jones
allowed Nicholson to score with the second run.
The Braves knotted the game in the third on Sibby Sisti's RBI single and a
two-out run-scoring double off the bat of Sam Jethroe. That set up the big
inning for the Phillies.
With one out Nicholson walked and Ennis followed with a blast into the left
field stands off Braves starter Johnny Sain, putting Philadelphia on top
4-2. Jones then followed with a drive halfway up the lower grandstand in
left field on a 2-2 change-up from Sain. Hamner completed the trifecta of
long balls with a line shot just inside the left field foul pole.
Boston tried to get back in the game in the fourth. Bob Elliott led off
with a double and scored after consecutive ground outs by Sid Gordon and Willard
Marshall and then scrapped to within two runs in the top of the sixth when
Marshall's two-out double scored Gordon, who had walked, from first base.
But it wasn't enough. The Phillies made it a three-run game again in the
bottom of the sixth on Jones' RBI single and then capped the scoring in the
eighth on a run-scoring double off the bat of Ennis.
