TROUT SEASON
Bengals Right-Hander 1-Hits A's
PHILADELPHIA, June 19 (AP) - Dizzy Trout carried a no-hitter into the seventh
inning and settled for a complete game one-ht shutout to carry the Detroit
Tigers past the Philadelphia Athletics at Shibe Park. The A's only hit was
a clean line drive to left off the bat of Gus Zernial with one out in the
seventh. Trout had previously walked three batters. After Zernial's
safety, Trout retired the final eight Phialdelphia batters in order.
The Tigers removed any real sense of pressure by tallying five times in the
contest's first two frames. Johnny Lipon and Jerry Priddy started the game
off with singles to left and George Kell followed with a looper to left of his
own. The ball dropped in front of Zernial, who overran it. Lipon
scored and Priddy and Kell ended up at second and third respectively.
Steve Souchock followed by grounding a single through the middle, plating Priddy
and Kell. A's starter Sam Zoldak (1-3) pitched out of further difficulty,
but Trout had all the runs he'd need.
For good measure, Detroit scored two more in the second. Trout and Lipon
opened with singles and Priddy's fly to center was deep enough to advance Trout
to third. Kell followed with a double to right-center, scoring both
runners and capping the game's scoring.
Zoldak settled down and tossed four shutout innings, but the damage had been
done. Philadelphia's best scoring chance actually occurred in the bottom
of the first. Eddie Joost and Wally Moses drew back-to-back walks off
Trout to open the frame. Dave Philley's grounder to third resulted in
force play at second, leaving runners at first and third with one out.
Zernial then rolled into a 4-6-3 double play. It was the only time in the
game the A's advanced a runner past first base as Trout retired 25 of the final
27 batters he faced.
Trout's one-hitter is the third in the major leagues so far this season.
Mickey McDermott of the Red Sox turned the trick in a victory over Washington on
May 27 and Billy Pierce of the White Sox accomplished the feat on a win of his
own against the Senators on June 14.
