CHISOX, YANKS SPLIT WILD DOUBLEHEADER
Zarilla's 3 HRs Help Sox Take Nightcap
NEW YORK, June 19 (AP) - Al Zarilla hit three solo home runs in the second game
to allow the Chicago White Sox to split a wild doubleheader with the New York
Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Eddie Robinson also hit three home runs for
Chicago, but one was in the opener. Both games were decided by a single
run, with the Yankees outlasting the White Sox in the opener, 13-12, and Chicago
besting New York 10-9 in 12 innings in the nightcap.
Zarilla's home runs came in three consecutive plate appearances in the second
game. Nellie Fox's two-run single in the second inning put the White Sox
on the board first. Zarilla's homer off New York starter Vic Raschi Phil
Masi's RBI-single in the third put Chicago on top 4-0.
But the Yankees erased the deficit with a four-run bottom of the third when
Mickey Mantle's fly ball plated Jerry Coleman from third. Gene Woodling's
three-run home run deep into the lower grandstand in left two batters later tied
the game.
But Raschi immediately turned the lead back over to the White Sox. Bud
Stewart tripled to left-center field and scored on Minnie Minoso's
grounder. Robinson and Zarilla followed with back-to-back solo home runs
for a 7-4 lead.
Zarilla led off the seventh with his third homer of the game, becoming the first
American Leaguer to homer in three consecutive plate appearances. Bob
Elliot of the Boston Braves is the lone National League hitter to turn the trick
this season, doing so in a win over the Pirates on June 14.
Chicago took an 8-4 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning and the game
seemed all but over. But the Yankees rallied. With one out, White
Sox starter Joe Dobson walked Phil Rizzuto and Woodling and was replaced by
Harry Dorish. Dorish retired Yogi Berra on a 3-6 fielder's choice, leaving
runners on first and third with two out. But Bobby Brown drew the third
walk of the inning, this one on four pitches, bringing Hank Bauer to the plate
with the bases loaded. Bauer, who hit three home runs in a single game
himself in a victory over Detroit just two days ago, crushed an 0-1 Dorish
breaking ball just inside the left field foul pole for a grand slam, tying the
game at eight.
The game was still tied in the 11th when, with two outs and the bases empty,
Eddie Robinson hit his second home run of the game, and third of the day, into
the right field bleachers to put the White Sox back on top.
But the Yankees came back again. Pinch hitter Joe DiMaggio reached on
Dorish's error and was sacrificed to second by Mickey Mantle. Phil Rizzuto
flied to right, but Woodling drove home his fourth run of the game with a solid
single to center field, making it 9-9.
But the White Sox wouldn't be denied. Bob Dillinger led off the 12th with
a single off Spec Shea and was sacrificed to second by Fox. Stewart
followed with a double to left and it was 10-9 Chicago. The Yankees put
together a threat in the bottom of the inning against new pitcher Lou Kretlow.
Jackie Jensen drew a lead off walk and promptly stole second. Bobby Brown
sacrificed Jensen to third. With Charlie Silvera at the plate--and the
Yankees bench empty--the White Sox pulled the infield in. The strategy
paid off when Silvera grounded right to Fox at second. Jensen had to hold
as Silvera was thrown out. Kretlow then fanned Billy Martin to end the
game.
The opener was every bit as crazy as the nightcap. The Yankees took a
first inning lead on Yogi Berra's three run upper deck home run to right.
The White Sox got a run back in the second on Chico Carrasquel's run-scoring
fielder's choice and then took the lead with four runs in the third on
run-scoring hits by Minoso, Robinson and Carrasquel and a ground out off the bat
of Don Lenhardt.
New York cut the lead to 5-4 on Jensen's RBI single in the third but the White
Sox scored two more in the fourth on Minoso's RBI double and Robinson's
run-scoring ground ball. A Mantle double play grounder in the bottom of
the fourth cut the deficit to 7-5 and after Rizzuto's fielder's choice brought
home Jerry Coleman in the sixth, the Yankees had pulled to within 7-6.
Robinson's two-run blast into the right field upper deck in the seventh appeared
to give Chicago a stranglehold on the contest, but the Yankees came all the way
back to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning. With one out Berra
single and Johnny Mize followed with a line shot into the seats in the right
field lower deck to trim the deficit to one run. Gil McDougald walked and
stole second base and Jerry Coleman plated him with a single to right, with
Coleman taking second on the throw. The game was now tied at nine.
Pinch hitter Gene Woodling singled to center, but Jim Busby cut down Coleman at
the plate for the second out of the inning. Woodling took second on the
throw and came around to score when Mantle doubled into the right field
corner. The Yankees took a 10-9 lead into the eighth.
Left-hander Joe Ostrowski came on for New York and immediately surrendered a
leadoff double to Joe Erautt. Pinch hitter Gus Niarhos was retired on a
pop to third but Bob Dillinger singled to center. Erautt scored and
Dillinger moved all the way around to third when Jensen's throw to the plate
soared over everything to the backstop. Fox slapped a single, scoring
Dillinger and putting the White Sox back on top, 11-10.
The Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Ken
Holcombe. Bauer led off with a walk and was forced at second by
Jensen. Berra lined out for the second out of the frame. Mize then
walked to put runners on first and second. Joe Collins came on to run at
first for Mize. McDougald then tied the game with a single to center,
scoring Jensen.
The White Sox took the lead one more time in the top of the 11th. With one
out, Carrasquel laced a sharp grounder over the first base bag and into the
right field corner that went for a triple. Stewart's fly ball to left
scored the Chicago shortstop and it was now 12-11.
In the bottom of the ninth, Woodling grounded to second but pinch hitter
DiMaggio walked and was replaced at first by pinch runner Billy Martin.
Rizzuto's grounder seemed ticketed for right field, but Nellie Fox smothered
it. The infield single left Yankees at first and second with one
out. Bauer walked to fill the bases and Jensen ended the improbable game
by grounding a single into left field, scoring both Martin and Rizzuto.
The doubleheader saw 44 runs scored on 55 hits, eight of them home runs, and 26
walks.
