FIRST TO TEN
Roberts Reaches Double Digits in Victories
PHILADELPHIA, June 6 (AP) - Robin Roberts' stellar season continues. The
Phillies right-hander became the first major league pitcher to earn his tenth
win in a 4-2 Philadelphia victory over the Chicago Cubs at Shibe Park. No
other major leaguer presently has more than eight victories. Roberts
(10-1) tossed his tenth complete game in 12 starts this season.
The Phillies took a lead they wouldn't surrender in the very first inning.
Facing Cubs starter Bob Schultz (3-4), Eddie Waitkus led off the frame with a
single. One out later, Willie Jones walked, putting runners at first and
second. Del Ennis then singled to right, scoring Waitkus and chasing Jones
to third. Jones scored on Dick Sisler's fly ball to left.
Philadelphia extended its lead in the fifth on Jones' eighth home run of the
year, a solo shot to left.
The Cubs made a game of it by finally solving Roberts in the sixth. With
one out, Frank Baumholtz tripled to the right-center field gap. Randy
Jackson plated the first Chicago run with a single to left, cutting the Phillies'
lead to 3-1. Smoky Burgess followed with a double to right-center,
advancing Jackson to third. Andy Pafko's infield roller moved both runners
up one base, making the score 3-2. But Roberts retained the lead when he
induced an infield roller off the bat of Hank Sauer to end the inning.
The Cubs threatened in the top of the eighth but, with runners on first and
third and two out, Pafko popped to Waitkus at first.
Philadelphia then tallied an insurance run in the bottom of the inning.
After Granny Hamner tripled to lead off the inning Chicago pulled the infield in
and second baseman Wayne Terwilliger kicked Mike Pellagrini's grounder for an
error, allowing Hamner to score.
The Cubs received a one-out double from Dee Fondy in the ninth inning, but he
was left stranded, ultimately, when pinch hitter Phil Cavaretta grounded to
first for the final out.
