ROSEN BELTS 3 HOMERS IN NIGHTCAP AS TRIBE SWEEPS CHISOX
Wynn, Gromek Both Throw CGs for Cleveland
CLEVELAND, May 27 (AP) - Al Rosen hit three home runs and drove in six in
Cleveland's 11-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Municipal Stadium
as the Indians completed a lopsided sweep of the Chicago White Sox. The
Indians won the opener, 9-4. Rosen became the first player in the major
leagues this season to hit three home runs in a single game.
Steve Gromek, in his first start of the year, went the route in the nightcap,
surrendering only a lone unearned run in the fifth inning. Gromek
scattered seven hits and fanned two without walking a single batter.
Rosen got things started in his first at bat, with a leadoff home run in the
second off White Sox starter Howie Judson, which extended Cleveland's lead to
2-0.
The Indians led 3-0 in the third when Rosen batted for the second time.
With Sam Chapman on third and Luke Easter on first the Cleveland third baseman
belted a three-run shot off Judson into the left field seats.
Rosen flied out in his third plate appearance but scored the home run hat trick
when he came to the plate in the seventh. Easter was on first after having
been hit with a pitch when Rosen drove a Lou Kretlow fastball over the
left-center field fence, capping the scoring for the ballgame.
Rosen did have a chance at a fourth home run when he batted in the eighth but
flied to center.
In the opener, the Indians pecked away at Joe Dobson for five innings, scoring
three times and led 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth when they broke the
game wide open. Ray Boone reached on an error leading off the inning and
scored on Bob Kennedy's triple to right-center field. Jim Hegan singled
home Kennedy and Wynn cracked a home run that just cleared the fence in straight
away left. Two outs later Harry Simpson belted a home run of his own into
the right field seats to make it 8-0.
Wynn (4-3) took a shutout into the ninth inning and only lost it when Simpson
dropped a fly ball and Snuffy Stirnweiss booted a grounder. The extra outs
allowed Chicago to score four unearned runs before Wynn finally ended the game
by inducing Eddie Robinson to fly out to center field.
The pair of complete games give the Indians 20 in 34 contests this season,
easily the best mark in the American League.
Cleveland is in second place, three games behind the New York Yankees.
