McDERMOTT'S 1-HITTER KEYS BOSOX SWEEP
5 HRs for Boston
BOSTON, May 27 (AP) - Mickey McDermott tossed a one-hit shutout in the opener
and Lou Boudreau cracked a three-run homer in the nightcap as the Boston Red Sox
swept a doubleheader from the Washington Senators at Fenway Park.
In the 15-0 pummeling in Game 1, Bobby Doerr paced the Boston attack with a pair
of home runs. Vern Stephens and Less Moss also went deep for the Red Sox
who pounded out 15 hits and drew 11 walks.
McDermott (2-1), meanwhile, completely stifled Washington's bats, surrendering
only a two-out single to Sam Dente in the fifth. The left-hander walked
three, struck out seven and never allowed a Senators runner to advance beyond
first base. The one-hitter is the first in the major leagues this
year. Sal Maglie of the National League's New York Giants posted a
no-hitter on May 9, but the previous low hit game in the American League this
season was two, shared by Lou Brissie of Cleveland and Al Sima of Washington.
The Red Sox seized control of the opener early. Run-scoring singles by Ted
Williams and Vern Stephens plated a pair of first inning tallies and Boudreau's
bases loaded walk made it 3-0 after two. Doerr's first home run, into the
screen above the left field wall, added another run in the third and Stephens
blast into the seats in center field in the fifth gave Boston a 5-0 lead.
But the game was effectively ended when the Red Sox pummeled a trio of
Washington pitchers for eight sixth inning runs. Three straight walks
started the inning and the first run scored on Boudreau's infield out.
Stephens doubled home two more and following the fourth walk of the inning Doerr
cracked a three-run shot over the Green Monster. Billy Goodman and
Williams later produced run-scoring singles to account for the last of the eight
tallies. Moss capped the game's scoring with a two-run home run in the
seventh.
The nightcap was more closely contended but the same team ended up on top.
Boston assigned a spot start to Harry Taylor, who had been having a dreadful
season out of the bullpen and it seemed that his poor season would continue this
day. After an easy first inning, Taylor walked Mickey Vernon to lead off
the second before surrendering consecutive singles to Irv Noren and Cass
Michaels to fill the bases. But Sam Dente bounced into a double
play. While a run scored, the chances of a big inning melted away.
In the top of the third, Senators starter Julio Moreno led off with a
double. Eddie Yost bunted Moreno to third and Mike McCormick promptly
singled home Washington's second run. Red Sox manager Steve O'Neil sent
the bullpen to work. But again Taylor induced a double play grounder, this
time of Sam Mele's bat, to escape damage. And from that point, he settled
down, shutting the Senators out for the remainder of the game.
Moreno, meanwhile kept Boston off the scoreboard until the sixth when the Red
Sox took the lead for good, with some help from Washington's shoddy
defense. Goodman led off the inning with a double and Williams reached
when Michaels kicked his routine grounder. Boudreau's fly to center scored
Goodman with the first run. Stephens then doubled off the left field wall,
advancing Williams to third. Walt Dropo's grounder to short--which should
have been the third out of the inning--scored Williams with the tying run.
Doerr was intentionally walked, but Moss foiled the strategy with a base hit,
scoring Stephens to make the score 3-2. The Red Sox picked up some
insurance in the seventh on Boudreau's two-out, two-run home run.
For the doubleheader, Boston starters McDermott and Taylor held the Senators to
a grand total of seven hits.
