ROE, DODGERS BLANK BRAVES
Left-Hander Earns 3rd Shutout
BROOKLYN, N.Y., May 25 (AP) - Preacher Roe's brilliant season continues.
The Brooklyn left-hander tossed his third shutout of the season to date, a
four-hitter, as the Dodgers bested the Boston Braves 3-0 at Ebbets Field.
It was the second time Roe (7-1) whitewashed Boston; the first occasion was on
April 24.
The loss, absorbed by hard luck loser Vern Bickford (5-3), brought the Braves'
three-game winning streak to an end and dropped Boston into a third place tie
with the Giants, six games behind Brooklyn.
The Braves never seriously threatened to score, pushing a runner past first only
once, with two outs in the first inning. It was the only frame in which
Boston put more than once runner on base.
The Dodgers, on the other hand, threatened regularly and the final score might
have been worse had Brooklyn not bunted into a pair of double plays.
As things stood, the Dodgers scored the only run they would need in the
third. With two outs, Cal Abrams bounced a single into right field.
Pee Wee Reese with a base hit of his own, advancing Abrams to second.
Jackie Robinson then laced a single to left, scoring Abrams.
Brooklyn doubled its lead in the sixth. Robinson led off with a walk and
moved to second when Gil Hodges reached on third baseman Bob Elliott's
error. Carl Furillo's bunt attempt was popped up and caught by catcher
Walker Cooper who fired to second to double up Robinson, who was caught in no
man's land. But Roy Campanella game through with a ringing double off the
left-center field wall to score Hodges with an unearned run, making it
2-0.
The Dodgers capped the scoring in the ninth. Furillo grounded a single
through the box with one out and Campanella then sliced a double to right,
moving Furillo to third. Don Thompson's grounder to a drawn in Elliott
resulted in Furillo being thrown out easily at the plate for the second out but
Cox reached on an infield single, scoring Campanella with the game's third and
final run.
Roe, meanwhile, was cruising, retiring 10 of the final 11 batters he
faced. The lefty becomes just the second big league pitcher to win seven
games this year. Larry Jansen of New York was the first, accomplishing the
feat in a 4-0 shutout of St. Louis on May 21.
