9TH INNING RALLY PUSHES TRIBE PAST YANKS
Lemon Outlasts Lopat in Pitchers' Duel
CLEVELAND, May 9 (AP) - The Cleveland Indians rallied for two runs in the bottom
of the ninth inning and defeated the New York Yankees 3-2 in front of better
than 30,000 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Allie Clark's single to right,
coupled with Mickey Mantle's error, allowed Larry Doby to score all the way from
first base with the tying run and pinch hitter Stuffy Stirnweiss' bases loaded
single past a drawn in infield scored pinch runner Milt Nielsen with the
game-winner.
The rally made a winner out of Cleveland starter Bob Lemon (3-1); Yankees
starting hurler Ed Lopat was the tough luck loser in what was a fine pitchers'
duel.
Neither team dented home plate until the sixth, when the Yankees broke the
scoreless draw. Johnny Mize singled with one out and Yogi Berra drew a
walk, putting runners on first and second. Bobby Brown followed by
bouncing a single into right field. The throw to the plate was late and
Berra and Brown ended up on second and third. Jackie Jensen's fly to
center scored Berra to make it 2-0. Lemon got out of the inning with no
further damage.
The Indians cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame. With one
out Harry Simpson walked and, an out later, Doby lashed a triple to
right-center, making it 2-1.
New York had several chances to extend the lead, but wasted Mantle's leadoff
double in the seventh, a one-out walk to Berra in the eighth and a leadoff walk
to Lopat in the ninth. The failed opportunities set up Cleveland's
game-winning rally in the bottom of the ninth inning.
With one out, Doby singled. Clark's single to right was misplayed by
Mantle who overran the ball in his haste to attempt to cut down Doby at
third. The error allowed Doby to score and Clark to move into
second. Nielsen ran for Clark and he took second when Ray Boone lined a
sharp single to center. With the infield in, Lopat pitched carefully to
Jim Hegan who drew a walk. Stirnweiss then pinch hit for Lemon and lined a
single between short and third, plating the game-winner.
