YANKS BELT 6 HRS, CRUSH BROWNS
Mantle Drives in 7 in Rout
ST. LOUIS, May 5 (AP) - The New York Yankees pounded out 25 hits--six of them
home runs--en route to a 23-2 massacre of the St. Louis Browns at Sportsman's
Park. A quintet of St. Louis hurlers issued 13 walks, contributing
significantly to the wreckage.
The Yankees scored in every inning save the last. Mickey Mantle went
4-for-6, including a triple and a pair of home runs, and drew a base on balls
while scoring four runs and driving in seven. Every player in the New York
starting lineup had at least one hit, and seven of the nine starters had at
least two. Pitcher Vic Raschi went 3-for-7--two of the hits were
doubles--and drove in three runs. Phil Rizzuto, Yogi Berra and Bobby Brown
each drew three free passes.
The Yankees knocked out Browns starter Don Johnson (0-2) in the third inning,
but it didn't really matter; none of his successors was any more
effective. Four of the five St. Louis pitchers allowed at least five runs
and the only one that didn't--Stubby Overmire, who mopped up the final two
frames--allowed two.
Fully 12 of the Yankees' 25 hits went for extra bases. New York stranded
13 runners in the game and the carnage would have been worse had the Browns not
turned three double plays.
When Raschi (3-2) wasn't hurting St. Louis with his bat, he was taming them with
his arm. The right-hander fired a complete game five-hitter, winning his
second straight start in the process.
The victory keeps the Yankees 2 1/2 games ahead of the second place Boston Red
Sox in the American League standings.
The game marks the third time in the last six contests that the Browns have
surrendered at least 15 runs. The team's earned run average now exceeds
six.
