ROE, DODGERS CRUISE PAST GIANTS
Left-Hander Extends Scoreless IP Streak to 20
BROOKLYN, N.Y., April 28 (AP) - Tommy Brown drove home three runs with a pair of
doubles and Preacher Roe tossed a four-hit shutout as the Brooklyn Dodgers
defeated the New York Giants 5-0 at Ebbets Field. It was Roe's second
straight shutout and his scoreless innings streak has now reached 20.
Brown scored the only run Brooklyn would need in the very first inning.
After leading off the frame with the first of his two-baggers, Brown advanced to
third on Carl Furillo's deep fly to right and scored on Duke Snider's ground
out.
The Dodgers plated three more runs in the fourth, all of then unearned.
Giants starter Roger Bowman (0-2) issued back-to-back walks to Gil Hodges and
Bruce Edwards to start the inning. Bowman retired Pee Wee Reese on a fly
to right for the first out and then faced Billy Cox. The Brooklyn third
baseman hit a grounder to Alvin Dark at short. His throw to Eddie Stanky
at second was poor, pulling Stanky off the bag. The error filled the bases
with one out. Bowman struck out Roe for the second out but Brown then came
through with his second double of the game, drilling a sharp grounder off the
glove of a diving Don Mueller at third and down the left field line. All
three baserunners scored and the Dodgers led 4-0.
Brooklyn capped the scoring in the sixth with their fourth unearned run of the
contest. Cox led off with a double and Roe reached when Bowman kicked his
dribbler. Brown hit into a double play, but Cox came home to make it 5-0.
Roe, meanwhile, had some issues with his control--walking four--but was stout
overall en route to the complete game shutout. The Giants only advanced
one runner past second base--in the fourth inning--and that was with two outs.
Roe's second shutout gives the Dodgers three on the season to date--two more
than any other club in the National League.
