DANCING BETWEEN THE RAINDROPS
Roe Scatters 11 Hits, 4 BBs in Shutout of Braves
BROOKLYN, N.Y., April 24 (AP) - Preacher Roe allowed 15 baserunners but managed
to toss a complete game shutout in Brooklyn's 1-0 shutout of the Boston Braves
at Ebbets Field. Boston stranded 12 runners in the game and had a least
one man on base in every inning but one. Roe's teammates assisted the
left-hander by turning three double plays and playing errorless ball.
Braves starter Max Surkont arguably out-pitched Roe by allowing just one run on
eight hits (no walks) in eight innings but emerged as the hard luck loser.
The game's only run scored in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Carl
Furillo roped a double off the right field screen. Duke Snider lifted a
long fly to center that was caught by Sam Jethroe, but Furillo tagged and
advanced to third. Jackie Robinson followed with a single to center,
scoring Furillo.
Boston had excellent scoring opportunities on a number of occasions.
With one out in the second, Walker Cooper drew a base on balls and Luis Olmo and
Buddy Kerr followed with singles to load the bases but Surkont grounded into an
inning-ending double play.
In the third, Roy Hartsfield led off with a single and was forced at second by
Jethroe. Torgeson drew a walk to put runners at first and second and Bob
Elliott's fly ball took Furillo to the warning track in right for the second
out, with Jethroe advancing to third. Sid Gordon grounded to Robinson at
second to end the frame.
In the sixth, Gordon singled with one out and was chased to third on Cooper's
double to left-center. The Dodgers pulled the infield in and it paid off
when Olmo grounded to Robinson who cut down Gordon at the plate for the second
out. Kerr's fly to Snider in center ended the inning.
The Braves had one last threat in the ninth. Kerr led off with a single to
center. Pinch hitter Luis Marquez struck out and Harstfield flied to
center. But Jetrhoe walked to put runners at first and second. But
Roe pitched out of the jam, retiring Earl Toregson on a grounder to second to
end the game.
Despite continuing to struggle on offense, the Dodgers--who are hitting just
.226 as a team and are dead last in the National League in runs--have won three
straight. This was Brooklyn's second 1-0 win its last three contests.
