BROWNS HURLERS WALK 16 IN LOSS TO TIGERS
No Strikeouts Recorded in 12-5 Loss
DETROIT, April 23 (AP) - St. Louis Browns pitchers issued 16 bases on balls in a
12-5 defeat at the hands of the Detroit Tigers at Briggs Stadium. Adding
insult to injury, St. Louis hurlers failed to strike out a single batter.
Browns pitchers had walked 24 batters in their first six games and then
increased that total by 2/3 in their seventh.
After surrendering a run in the first, St. Louis took a 4-1 lead in the second
on a two-run double by Tom Upton and a two-run single off the bat of Jim Delsing.
The Tigers came right back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the
inning when Don Johnson walked the first three batters of the inning to fill the
bases, second baseman Bobby Young booted a double play grounder and Johnson
followed that with a pair of additional free passes and a run-scoring single to
Vic Wertz.
The Browns tied the game in the third with an unearned run, but Detroit took the
lead for good in the fourth. Neil Berry led off with a solo home run to
left and when Johnson walked Jerry Priddy his day was done. Jim Medlinger
replaced him but ultimately surrendered Don Kryhoski's RBI single.
The Tigers put some distance between themselves and the Browns in the fifth,
aided immeasurably by four Medlinger free passes. He was eventually
replaced by Sid Schacht. Schacht walked a couple of batters of his own,
leading to a Detroit run in the sixth. Duane Pillette was the final St.
Louis hurler; he limited himself to one walk in a pair of innings, but did
surrender Wertz's second home run of the day.
Detroit's Joe Ginsberg was the most prolific beneficiary of the Browns'
wildness, drawing four free passes, but six different Tigers drew at least two
walks. Hoot Evers was the only Detroit player not to draw a walk.
