DOM'S
SINGLE IN NINTH WINS GAME FOR AL
Campy
Named MVP in Losing Cause
DETROIT, July 10 (AP) - Dom
DiMaggio's single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Chico Carrasquel with
the winning run as the American League slipped past the National League, 5-4, in
an exciting Mid-Summer Classic played before a sellout crowd of 57,852 at Briggs
Stadium. Brooklyn's Roy Campanella went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and
two runs batted in, and was named the Most Valuable Player of the All-Star Game,
albeit in a losing effort for his side. Every player on both sides appeared in
the game with the exception of Sal Maglie of the New York Giants for the
Nationals and Eddie Lopat of the New York Yankees for the Americans. Both
pitchers had started games on the final day before the All-Star break and were,
in any case, being held back in case the game reached extra innings.
The National League took the
lead in the game in the fourth. Ralph Kiner of the Pittsburgh Pirates
lined a double into left-center field off AL starter, Cleveland's Early Wynn.
Campanella followed with a home run into the seats in left to put the NL on top
2-0.
The American League seized
control in the bottom of the fourth against NL starter Robin Roberts of the
Philadelphia Phillies. Boston's Ted Williams dropped a single into left
field and Eddie Robinson of the Chicago White Sox then homered off the facade of
the upper deck in right field to tie the game. Robinson's teammate Minnie
Minoso then singled and Roberts was replaced by Cincinnati's Ewell Blackwell.
Yankees catcher Yogi Berra than laced a triple into the right field corner,
scoring Minoso and putting the AL on top for the first time, 3-2. Vern
Stephens of the Red Sox doubled to right-center, scoring Berra with the fourth
run of the inning. At that point, Blackwell stiffened and retired Eddie
Joost, reliever Ned Garver and pinch hitter Elmer Valo in order to escape
further damage, but the American League now held a 4-2 lead.
The score remained the same
until the top of the seventh when the NL pulled to within 4-3 on a solo home run
off the bat of Willie Jones of the Phillies and yielded by Chicago's Billy
Pierce.
The NL then pulled even in the
top of the eighth against Bob Lemon of the Indians. Sam Jethroe of the
Braves led off by reaching on an error by Yankees second baseman Jerry Coleman.
But when the Phillies' Del Ennis rolled into a double play, Lemon appeared out
of the woods. The Cardinals' Stan Musial, however, doubled to right-center
field and Andy Seminick of the Phillies laced a two-bagger of his own over the
third base bag, scoring Musial with the game-tying run. Lemon retired
pinch hitter Monte Irivin of the Giants on a grounder to hometown favorite
George Kell of the Tigers to end the inning.
Vern Bickford of the Boston
Braves retired the AL in order in the bottom of the eighth and the NL then had a
golden opportunity to take the lead in the top of the ninth. The Dodgers'
Gil Hodges grounded a leadoff single to left off Lemon and was forced at second
by Jones. Al Dark of the Giants then doubled to left, chasing Jones to
third. With the infield in, Lemon induced a shallow fly to left off the
bat of Red Schoendienst of the Cardinals, forcing the runners to hold.
With two outs, Lemon was replaced on the hill by Joe Dobson of the White Sox who
got Jethroe on another inning-ending grounder to third.
Having staved off the National
League threat in the top half of the inning, the American League seemed poised
to win the game in the bottom half. And they did. Kell led off with
a single to left off Bickford. Chico Carrasequel's bunt attempt led to a
force of Kell at second with the first out of the inning. But Carrasquell
took off on a 1-1 pitch to Ferris Fain of the Athletics who executed a perfect
hit-and-run single to right, advancing Carrasquel to third. That set the
stage for Dom DiMaggio's heroics. The single to right scored Carrasquel
and the AL left the field 5-4 victors.
