JOHNSON HITS FOR CYCLE, LEADS CUBS PAST PHILS

Borowy Tosses Shutout

PHILADELPHIA, July 27 (AP) – Don Johnson hit for the cycle, scored three times and drove in three runs, leading the Chicago Cubs to an 8-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Shibe Park in the first game of a doubleheader.  Cubs starter Hank Borowy did his part, firing a seven-hit shutout.  In the nightcap, Chicago completed the sweep, rallying from a 5-3 deficit late to secure a 6-5 win.

Johnson becomes just the second major leaguer to hit for the cycle thus far this season, joining Rudy York of the Boston Red Sox, who accomplished the feat on July 5 in a 16-inning victory over the Philadelphia Athletics, also at Shibe Park.  Thus, Johnson is the first National League player to hit for the cycle this year, and the only major league player to do so in a nine-inning game.

The contest itself wasn’t very competitive.  The Cubs seized control immediately, scoring thee times in the top of the first against Phillies starter Ken Raffensberger.  After Stan Hack drew a lead-off walk, Johnson began his quest for the cycle by singling Hack to third.  One out later, Phil Cavarretta’s base hit plated Hack with the game’s first run, and advanced Johnson to second.  After Andy Pafko’s ground out advanced the baserunners 90 feet, Dom Dallessandro doubled them both home.

In the second, Hack drew a two-out walk from Raffensberger and Johonson followed with a home run to left, making it 5-0.

The Cubs added a run in the fifth when Clyde McCullough singled home Cavarretta.  In the sixth, Hack doubled with one out and scored on Johnson’s triple.  Peanuts Lowrey then brought home Johnson with a base hit.

That completed the scoring, but Johnson had a final plate appearance when he led off the eighth against Andy Karl and delivered a double to right, completing the cycle.

For his part, Borowy walked five batters and allowed seven hits, but all of the safeties were singles, and Borowy effectively worked around the baserunners, stranding all 12 of them, en route to the shutout.
