CUBS SWEEP PHILS, EXTEND ‘W’ STREAK TO 11
Club Chases Dodgers for Longest Streak of Season
CHICAGO, July 21 (AP) – The Chicago Cubs swept a doubleheader from the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field, extending their winning streak to 11 games. The streak is the second longest of the big league season to date, trailing only the 13-game winning streak set by the Brooklyn Dodgers from June 24 to July 7.
The Cubs won the opener by a comfortable 7-3 score. Chicago scored the game’s first six runs and took a 6-0 lead into the top of the sixth. The Cubs scored two in the first, with Andy Pafko and Marv Rickert driving home runs, and pushed a single tally across in the second on Peanuts Lowrey’s RBI single. In the fifth, Chicago plated three more runs, on RBI doubles off the bats of Clyde McCullough and pitcher Hank Borowy.
The Phillies tried to make a game of it, scoring twice in the sixth and one more run in the seventh—the latter coming on a Del Ennis home run--cutting the deficit to three.
But the Cubs added an insurance run in the eighth on Don Johnson’s RBI base hit and went on to win by four.
The nightcap was a pitcher’s duel between Philadelphia’s Ken Raffensberger and Chicago’s Claude Passeau, neither of whom factored into the decision.
The game was scoreless through six, but the Phillies broke the deadlock in the top of the seventh. Ennis led off with a base hit and stole second. Frank McCormick sacrificed the runner to third and Ennis scored on Rollie Hemsley’s long fly to center.
The Cubs tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. Bob Scheffing and Billy Jurges opened the frame with consecutive singles, leaving runners on first and second, but Passeau, after failing to get a bunt down, grounded into a double play, leaving Scheffing on third with two outs. Lowrey, however, came through with a base hit to left, plating Scheffing with the tying run.
Both starters were lifted for pinch hitters, to no effect, and were out of the game by the time the Cubs came to bat in the bottom of the eleventh. With Lefty Hoerst on the mound for Philadelphia,
Eddie Waitkus led off by grounding a single to left. Phil Cavarretta followed with an infield hit. Speedy Lou Stringer pinch ran for Waitkus at second and Dom Dallessandro pinch hit for Pafko. Dallessandro worked the count full and then slashed a ground ball past third baseman Jim Tabor and down the left field line. Stringer came around to score, and Dallessandro was credited with a game-winning double.
The Cubs will try to continue their already impressive streak when they take on the Dodgers at Ebbets Field.
