WILLIAMS, DIMAGGIO BOTH GO DEEP TWICE, PROPEL BOSOX COMEBACK

Ferris Guts Out CG, Earns 14th ‘W’

BOSTON, July 12 (AP) – Ted Williams and Dom DiMaggio belted two home runs apiece, and Leon Culberson added his first long ball of the season as the Boston Red Sox rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat the Detroit Tigers 8-5 at Fenway Park.  Boo Ferriss tossed a complete game and earned his 14th victory of the season, tying him with Spud Chandler of the New York Yankees for the American League lead in that category.

Williams and DiMaggio became the first pair of AL teammates to hit multiple home runs in the same game this year.  In the National League, Ernie Lombardi and Babe Young of the New York Giants each hit a pair of homers in an April 26 loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers at the Polo Grounds.  The five home runs hit by the Red Sox overall match a single-game major league high this season.  The Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals have also accomplished the feat once thus far this year.

Four of the home runs were surrendered by Tigers starter Virgil Trucks, matching the most allowed by a pitcher in a single game in the big leagues this season.  Howie Pollett of the Cardinals and Vic Lombardi of the Dodgers have also allowed four round trippers in a single contest.

DiMaggio’s first home run, game with two outs in the bottom of the first inning and gave Boston a 1-0 lead.

Detroit tied the game in the top of the second when Hank Greenberg led off and deposited a Ferriss offering on Landsdowne Street.  It was the 10th home run Greenberg, the major league leader in homers with 30, has hit against the Red Sox thus far this season.  Greenberg has homered in nine of the 13 games he has played against Boston.

Detroit then plated three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.  Jimmy Bloodworth led off with a base hit and scored one out later on Trucks’ double.  Eddie Lake singled Trucks to third and George Kell’s two-bagger plated both runners.

But the Red Sox cut two runs off that lead in the bottom of the fifth when Johnny Pesky led off with a double and scored one later on Williams’ first home run of the contest.

The Tigers upped their lead to 5-3 in the sixth when Bloodworth reached on a two-base error charged to Pesky, moved to third on Birdie Tebbets’ base hit to right, and scored when Trucks rolled into a fielder’s choice.

Detroit still led by two runs when Boston came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh.  Pesky led off with his second double of the game and DiMaggio crushed a 2-2 pitch into the seats above the center field wall, tying the contest.  Williams immediately followed with his second home run of the game, deep into the seats down the right field line, giving the Red Sox a 6-5 lead. It was just the second time that Boston batters had gone back-to-back this season.  Pesky and Williams turned the trick in the fourth inning of an 11-9 victory over the St. Louis Browns at Fenway Park on May 6.

After Ferriss held the Tigers scoreless in the top of the eighth, the Red Sox used the long ball one more time to gain some insurance.  Hal Wagner led off with a single to left-center and, one out later, Culberson sent a 2-0 pitch from Detroit reliever Johnny Gorsica over the big wall in left for his first home run of the year and an 8-5 Boston advantage.

Ferriss set the Tigers down in order in the ninth to finish off the contest.

It was third straight win and the 18th victory in the last 22 games for the Red Sox.
