STIRNWEISS’ DRAMATIC 2B GIVES AL ALL-STAR ‘W’

Teams Combine for 8 Hits in Pitchers’ Duel

BOSTON, July 8 (AP) – Snuffy Stirnweiss’ double in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Lou Boudreau with the game’s only run, giving the American League a 1-0 victory over the National League in Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game at Fenway Park.  The game was a pitchers’ duel throughout, with a mere eight hits—only two for extra bases--amassed between the two teams.  It was also something of a defensive exhibition, as the two sides combined to turn six double plays.  That made the circumstances surrounding the contest’s sole tally so ironic.

11 different pitchers toed the rubber in the game, and none of them was charged with an earned run.  They combined to strike out 12 batters and walk six.  Bob Feller (AL) and Howie Pollett got the nod as starters and each through three scoreless frames.

The AL erased NL baserunners via double plays in the third, fourth, seventh and eighth innings, including by line drive (3rd) and strike out/throw out (4th).  The NL extinguished potential AL rallies with twin killings in the second and third innings.

The pitching and defense, for both clubs, was so tight that no baserunner advanced past second base until the eighth inning.  In the top of the eighth, Clyde McCullough led off with the game’s first extra base hit, a ground ball between first baseman Rudy York and the bag, that went for a double off Spud Chandler, who was in his second inning of relief for the AL.  Pee Weese dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt, advancing McCullough to third with one out.  Chandler then walked Stan Hack on four pitches to put runners on the corners, bringing Billy Herman to the plate.  But on a 1-1 pitch, Herman rolled into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Harry Breechen began his second inning of relief work for the NL in the bottom of the eighth, and got off to a good start, striking out Charlie Keller.  He then worked ahead of Boudreau 0-2 and, in a fateful moment, fanned the Cleveland shortstop, but the third strike pitch got past McCullough for a passed ball, allowing Boudreau to reach first base.  Jerry Priddy then reached on an infield single, putting runners on first and second.  That brought Stirnweiss to the plate, and the NL countered with right-hander Ted Wilks.  Stirnweiss launched a drive to left.  Left fielder Enos Slaugher—playing out of position and in an unfamiliar ballpark with a notorious towering edifice in left field--retreated and made a leaping catch, but lost control of the ball upon colliding with the wall.  Boutdreau came around to score and Priddy advanced to third on what was properly scored a double for Stirnweiss.  With the infield in, Buddy Rosar grounded to short, and Reese gunned down Priddy at the plate for the second out.  Tommy Henrich pinch hit for his teammate, Chandler, but grounded to second to end the inning.

The NL came to the plate in the ninth trailing by a run, facing Dizzy Trout.  Slaughter drew a one-out walk, but Trout retired Tommy Holmes on a ground ball and Elbie Fletcher on a fly to left to close out the game.
