QUEEN MAKES MOST OF 19-RUN OUTBURST, 1-HITS NATS

DiMaggio Continues Assault on Washington

WASHINGTON, July 5 (AP) – Mel Queen, making his first start of the season, tossed a one-hit shutout as the New York Yankees mauled the Washington Senators 19-0 at Griffith Stadium.  The only hit the Senators managed came on Jake Early’s leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Queen worked around four walks and an error, to complete New York’s league-leading 14th shutout of the year.  No other American League club has managed more than nine shutouts.  The Yankees have now thrown three no-hitters and two one-hitters in the span of less than half a season.

The loss was the eighth in a row for Washington, one shy of the team’s longest losing streak, set in mid-May.

Queen’s teammates made things very easy on their starting pitcher, scoring three times in the top of the first inning and taking a nine-run lead by the end of the third.  Seven Yankees batters—including Queen himself—accrued at least two hits in the game, and five players had at least three hits as the club set a new season-high with 22 safeties.

The Senators made a bad situation worse by committing four errors and surrendering a passed ball, leading to nine unearned runs allowed.  Washington starter Bobo Newsom was lifted after three innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on six hits, including a pair of homers in a five-run third inning, and issuing four walks.  The just recalled Early Wynn replaced Newsom in the fourth inning to make his season debut, and was essentially the designated punching bag as Senators manager Ossie Bluege was determined to rest an exhausted bullpen.  Wynn ended up finishing the game, tossing six innings despite allowing 10 runs (three earned) on 16 hits and a walk.  He also uncorked a wild pitch.

The Yankees already led 9-0 when they exploded for nine more runs in the fifth, sending 13 men to the plate, and banging out nine hits.  Joe DiMaggio had a pair of singles in the inning, and Aaron Robinson homered and tripled, driving in three runs.

DiMaggio and Joe Gordon each had four hits for the Yankees, including a home run apiece.  DiMaggio continued his devastation of Senators pitching.  In 11 games against Washington thus far this season, DiMaggio is batting .333 (16-488), with two three doubles, a triple and five home runs.  He has scored 14 runs and driven in 20.

Hew York is 9-2 against Washington this year and has won five straight games in the head-to-head series.

Queen is the 12th different pitcher to start a game for the Yankees so far this season.  New York starters collectively lead the AL in ERA with a 2.74 mark.
