DODGERS DUMP GIANTS, EXTEND ‘W’ STREAK TO 12

Barney Fans 8, Herring Tosses 3.2 IP of Shutout Relief

NEW YORK, July 5 (AP) – Rex Barney struck out eight over 5 1/3 innings and Art Herring tossed 3 1/3 frames of scoreless relief as the Brooklyn Dodgers extended their winning streak to 12 in a row with an 8-3 victory over the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds.  The 12-game winning streak is by far the longest of the major league season thus far.  The Detroit Tigers have a pair of eight-game streaks, but the longest prior winning skein in the National League is seven, held by three teams—including the Dodgers.

Barney improved to 4-2 on the season and shut the Giants out through five innings, but a combination of wildness and poor defense did the Brooklyn starter in in the sixth.

Prior to Barney wilting, the Dodgers built up a substantial advantage and knocked New York starter Hal Shumacher out of the game in the fourth.

Brooklyn plated a pair of runs in the opening frame, and could have had more.  Eddie Stanky led off the game with a double to right-center and scored when Cookie Lavagetto grounded a single to left.  After Pete Reiser flied out, Dixie Walker drew a free pass.  Ed Stevens grounded to third, with the runners advancing to second and third, and Dick Whitman followed with a base hit through the box.  Lavageto scored easily, but Willard Marhsall gunned Stevens down at the plate to end the inning.

The Dodgers blew the game open with a five-run fourth, sending 11 men to the plate in the process.  Whitman singled with one out and stole second, and Peewee Resse drew a walk.  Bruce Edwards followed with a base hit, scoring Whitman and chasing Reese to third. Barney then reached when first baseman Johnny Mize fumbled his grounder for an error, with Reese scoring on the play.  Brooklyn now led 4-0, and a walk to Stanky loaded the bases.  Lavagetto drew another base on balls, scoring Edwards with the third run of the inning.  Reiser grounded out to second, with all three baserunners advancing 90 feet.  Barney scored on the play, making it 6-0, and Walker drew another free pass, reloading the bases.  That ended the day for Schumacher--who was replaced by Bob Joyce--but not the parade of walks.  Stevens drew the fifth free pass of the inning, forcing home Stanky, putting Brooklyn ahead 7-0. Whitman flied out to finally end the inning.

The Giants got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when a walk to pinch hitter Jack Graham, coupled with a passed ball charged to Edwards, allowed Goody Rosen to score.  And in the sixth, the Giants appeared to make a game of it.  Barney walked the first three batters of the inning in quick succession and, while the Dodgers hurriedly got Herring up in the bullpen, Barney came back to fan Ernie Lombardi for the first out.  But Edwards was charged with catcher’s interference with Sid Gordon at the plate, forcing home the second New York run, and Herring replaced Barney on the mound.  Rosen filed to deep right, scoring Mickey Witek with the third Giants run.  Bill Rigney flied out to end the inning and, as it turned out, New York’s chances.

Herring held the Giants to just one additional hit, slamming the door on the ballgame.  The Dodgers plated a final run in the eighth when Herring led off with a double and, following a sacrifice bunt by Stanky and yet another walk to Lavagetto, scored on Reiser’s ground out.

Brooklyn will attempt to extend its winning streak to 13 straight tomorrow when the Dodgers travel to Boston to face the Braves.
