GIANTS TURN TRIPLE PLAY IN DH OPENING ROUT OF PHILS

Rowe Fires 2-Hit Shutout in Nightcap Split

PHILADELPHIA, June 30 (AP) – The Giants turned a triple play, Dave Koslo tossed a complete game and Ernie Lombardi belted a grand slam as New York routed the Philadelphia Phillies 11-2 in the opener of a doubleheader at Shibe Park.  In the nightcap, Schoolboy Rowe fired his National League leading fifth shutout of the season—and third in his last three starts—as the Phillies rebounded for a 2-0 victory.

The opener was scoreless entering the fourth inning when the Giants seized command.  Johnny Mize started things off for New York with a one-out single off Phillies starter Oscar Judd.  Lombardi drew a walk and Sid Gordon followed with a base hit to center.  Mize tried to score on the play but Johnny Wyrostek gunned him down at the plate for the second out.  Just when Philadelphia seemed poised to escape the frame unscathed, it all came apart.  Jack Graham singled to right, loading the bases, and then Bill Rigney followed with the second of his three hits in the contest, an infield single, scoring Lombardi and leaving the sacks filled.  Koslo then aided his own cause, dumping a single into left-center field, scoring two more runs to give New York a 3-0 lead.

The Giants blew the game open in the fifth with a six-run outburst, chasing Judd from the contest.  Willard Marshall led off and was hit by a pitch, and Buddy Kerr followed with a bunt single, putting runners on first and second.  Mize became the second hit batsman of the frame, loading the bases and bringing Lombardi to the plate.  Judd fell behind the New York catcher 3-1 and was forced to come in with a fastball.  Lombardi was waiting and deposited it into the lower grandstand in left-center field for a grand slam and a 7-0 advantage.  Johnny Humphries replaced Judd on the mound, but the Giants weren’t through, capitalizing on shortstop Skeeter Newsome’s error on Sid Gordon’s grounder to score two additional runs, both unearned, on RBIs from Koslo and Buddy Blattner.  It was now 9-0 and the outcome was effectively decided.

The Phillies scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on singles off the bats of Emil Verban and Humphries, but it was merely window dressing.

After the Giants plated their tenth run in the top of the eighth on Gordon’s run-scoring double, New York displayed some defensive magic.  Koslo walked Wyrostek to open the inning and an error charged to second baseman Blattner on Newsome’s grounder left runners on first and second with no outs.  That brought Ron Northey to the plate, and on a 1-1 pitch he lined sharply to the right side of the infield.  Blattner, who was in double play depth, snared the drive with a leap, stepped on second base to retire Wyrostek, and fired to Mize at first to eliminate Newsome, who was trapped halfway between first and second.  It was the second triple play of the season for the Giants, and for all of baseball as well.  New York had successfully turned a triple play on May 29 in a loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field.  No other team has, to date, completed a triple play this season.

Marshall’s RBI single in the top of the ninth capped the scoring.  Koslo pitched around a two-out pinch-hit single off the pat of Charlie Gilbert in the ninth to finish off his ninth complete game of the year.

In the nightcap, Rowe took a no-hitter into the sixth—the second time he’s done so this season—before surrendering a double to his counterpart, Giants starter Dave Budnick.  But he then retired Blattner and Marshall on grounders to escape damage.

The Phillies didn’t dent home plate until the bottom of the seventh when a two-out rally produced the contest’s only runs.  Verban singled with two down and Rowe drew a base on balls from Budnick.  Wyrostek then blooped a single to right.  Verban scored and Marshall’s futile throw to the plate was wild, allowing Rowe to come around to score on the play as well.

In the top of the ninth, trailing 2-0, Blattner led off with New York’s second hit of the game, a single to right-center.  Marshall grounded to first, forcing Blattner at second, but beating the relay throw.  But Kerr wasn’t so fortunate, ending the game by grounding into a 4-6-3 double play.

Rowe has now won five games this season, all of them by shutout.
