CHANDLER TOSSES 2ND NO-HITTER OF SEASON

Keller Homers, Extends Hitting Streak to 18

ST. LOUIS, June 14 (AP) – Spud Chandler fired his second no-hitter in less than two months, leading the New York Yankees to a 14-0 pounding of the St. Louis Browns at Sportsman’s Park.  Chandler had previously stymied the Washington Senators, no-hitting them on April 21 at Yankee Stadium.  On this occasion, he took a perfect game into the seventh inning, retiring 20 straight batters, before issuing a two-out walk to Vern Stephens.  It would be the only baserunner the Browns managed in the entire game.

The Yankees took the lead in the second inning when Joe DiMaggio drew a leadoff walk from St. Louis starter Bob Muncrief and then, two outs later, scored on Nick Etten’s double, the first of four hits Etten amassed in the game.

In the fifth, New York took firm control of the contest.  Chandler led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by Snuffy Stirnweiss.  Tommy Henrich made the sacrifice irrelevant by ripping his 13th home run, tying him with Charlie Keller for the club lead, to give the Yankees a 3-0 advantage.  The tie with Keller lasted for all of one minute, as the Yankees left fielder went back-to-back with Henrich, depositing a Muncrief offering on the pavilion roof in right field.  The home run was Keller’s 14th of the season and extended his major league season best hitting streak to 18 games.  The long ball was Keller’s eighth in just 13 June contests.

Already in firm command, the Yankees broke the game wide open over the final three frames, tallying ten runs from the seventh inning on.  The Browns contributed to the carnage, committing four errors in the game, leading to three unearned runs.  Billy Johnson singled home a run in the seventh and belted a two-run homer in the eighth to assist the Yankees padding of their lead.

Despite all the offensive fireworks, Chandler was the real story for New York.  He was in firm command throughout, and was overpowering at time, striking out eight batters, while missing perfection by just a whisker.  The closest the Browns came to a hit was when Joe Grace got most of a 3-1 offering in the seventh and hit a fly to deep center that DiMaggio ran down for the second out of the inning.  That immediately preceded the walk to Stephens, which ended the pursuit of a perfect game.  But Chandler shook it off and retired Wally Judnich on a foul pop to Etten at first, beginning the streak of seven consecutive St. Louis batters retired to close out the no-hitter.

Chandler won his first six starts of the year before losing the next two.  He has now won his last three decisions in a row.  Chandler has won both of his starts against the Browns, yielding no runs in 18 innings.  His 1.39 earned run average is tops among American League qualifiers.
