GREENBERG BURIES YANKS WITH 3 HRS, 8 RBIS
Trout Snaps 2-Game Personal ‘L’ Streak
NEW YORK, June 12 (AP) – Hank Greenberg belted three home runs and drove in eight, almost single-handedly leading the Detroit Tigers past the New York Yankees 9-2 at Yankee Stadium. Greenberg reached base safely in all five of his plate appearances, adding a double and a walk to his three long balls. The eight runs batted in and 16 total bases accumulated by Greenberg are major league single-game season highs to date. Greenberg is the second big leaguer, and first American League player, to hit three home runs in a single game. Bennie Warren of the New York Giants hit three home runs on May 19 in New York’s 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Polo Grounds.
Tigers starter Dizzy Trout was the beneficiary of Greenberg’s largesse, using it to good effect. After winning his first seven decisions this season, he had lost two in a row, but held the Yankees to just two runs en route to his eighth victory and 10th complete game of the year.
Greenberg got started in the top of the first. With Doc Cramer on second and Dick Wakefield on first, via a base hit and a walk respectively, Greenberg strode to the plate with two outs and drove the first pitch he saw from Cuddles Marshall into the bleachers in right-center field for a three-run homer.
In the top of the third, with Detroit already on top 3-0, Cramer doubled with one out and Jimmy Outlaw and Wakefield both walked to load the bases. That brought Greenberg to the plate and he ripped a bases clearing double to left-center.
Greenberg led off the top of the fifth with his second home run of the contest, giving the Tigers a 7-1 lead. And in the sixth, he completed the trifecta. Outlaw drew a one-out free pass and, after Wakefield popped out, Greenberg launched a Frank Hiller pitch into the lower grandstand in left, putting the Tigers ahead 9-1.
Greenberg now has a major league leading 21 home runs on the year.
Despite losing in convincing fashion, there were a couple of bright spots for the Yankees. Tommy Henrich had a pair of hits, a double and his tenth home run of the year, and Charlie Keller extended his hitting streak to 17 games, matching Lou Boudreau of Cleveland for the longest such skein in the AL thus far this season.
