TROUT FIRES 12-INNING SHUTOUT
Greenberg’s HR is Game’s Only Run
CHICAGO, May 26 (AP) – Dizzy Trout tossed 12 innings of three-hit, shutout ball and Hank Greenberg’s solo home run in the top of the 12th inning elevated the Detroit Tigers past the Chicago White Sox 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at Comiskey Park. Chicago earned a split by winning the nightcap, 4-2.
White Sox starter Thornton Lee pitched into the 11th inning and held the Tigers off the scoreboard, but walked seven batters and was replaced by Johnny Rigney after issuing consecutive free passes to open the 11th. Rigney wriggled out of trouble, but ultimately was victimized by Greenberg, who homered for the third time in the series and leads the American League in long balls.
Trout was outstanding, allowing only four Chicago batters to reach base all game long. He struck out five. After allowing a one-out single to Wally Moses in the bottom of the second, Trout retired nine in a row before yielding a two-out double to Jake Jones in the fourth. Whitey Piatt grounded to short to end the inning; Piatt the first of 12 consecutive White Sox hitters set down by Trout. A two-out walk to Mike Tresh in the eighth interrupted the streak, but Lee rolled into a fielder’s choice to close out the inning, the first of 11 straight batters retired. The White Sox never advanced a runner past second base.
The Tigers, meanwhile, had runners on base regularly. They grounded into double plays in each of the first two frames and never were retired in order. But they never had a runner reach third base with less than two outs.
In the top of the 11th, Lee walked Eddie Lake and Eddie Mayo to open the inning, and Rigney replaced Lee. Rigney fanned Hoot Evers for the first out and then retired Dick Wakefied on a 3-6-3 double play grounder, the third time the Tigers had banged out a double play ball.
In the top of the 12th, Greenberg led off with a home run that landed deep in the lower grandstand in left, giving Detroit a 1-0 lead. The Tigers put two more runners on base—singles off the bats of George Kell and Trout—but couldn’t add an insurance run.
Trout retired Wayne Hodgin on a fly to right to open the bottom of the 12th, but Moses slapped his second base hit of the game, bringing the winning run to the plate. But Luke Appling flied to left and Jones struck out to end the contest.
The victory was the sixth of the year for Trout.
