BAHR LOSES NO-NO IN 9TH, SETTLES FOR 1-HITTER
Bucs Bounce Back from Whitewash, Shutout Phils
PHILADELPHIA, May 23 (AP) – Ed Bahr surrendered a one-out single to Skeeter Newsome in the bottom of the ninth inning, losing his no-hit bid in the process, but shook off the disappointment to complete a one-hit shutout as the Pittsburgh Pirates blanked the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 at Shibe Park. It was a nice response for the Pirates who had been shut out themselves by the Phillies, 7-0, the day before.
Bahr is now the second major league hurler this season to toss a complete game one-hit shutout. Claude Passeau of the Chicago Cubs turned the trick—with the Pirates as his victims—on April 23 at Forbes Field.
Pittsburgh took the lead in the top of the first against Philadelphia starter Tommy Hughes. Lee Handley led off the contest with a double and was sacrificed to third by Jim Russell. Al Gionfriddo’s grounder to short with the infield back scored Handley and the Pirates had a 1-0 advantage.
And that’s where things remained until the top of the seventh. Bahr pitched around errors—including one of his own—in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. Double plays—in the first, fourth and fifth—helped keep the Phillies from advancing a runner past first until the seventh, when Del Ennis reached on a two-out, two-base error committed by Pirates second baseman Frank Giustine. But Bahr retired Frank McCormick on a ground ball to short to end the inning.
Pittsburgh picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Elbie Fletcher drew a leadoff walk from Hughes and advanced to second on Giustine’s sacrifice. Ralph Kiner grounded to second, moving Fletcher to third with two outs and then Billy Cox came through by grounding a base hit into left field, scoring Fletcher to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Bahr retired pinch hitter Lou Novikoff on a foul pop, bringing Newsome to the plate. On a 2-2 pitch, Newsome bounced a base hit past a diving Cox into center field for Philadelphia’s first of the game. Bahr didn’t flinch. He retired Johnny Wyrostek on a routine fly to center and Ennis on a soft grounder to first to end the game.
