ROWE’S 3-HIT SHUTOUT LEADS PHILS PAST BUCS
McCormick is 1st Big Leaguer with 5 Hits
PHILADKLPHIA, May 22 (AP) – Schoolboy Rowe tossed his second shutout in four starts thus far this season and Frank McCormick became the first major leaguer to amass five hits in a game as the Philadelphia Phillies rolled past the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-0 at Shibe Park. Rowe also aided his own cause by hitting the game’s only home run. Dell Ennis contributed three hits and three runs batted in. Rowe struck out only one batter but walked no one in a remarkably efficient performance that saw him allow only three isolated safeties and one hit batter.
The best chance for the Pirates to score came in the top of the very first inning. With one out, Rowe hit Frank Colman with a pitch and Elbie Fletcher followed with a base hit. Frankie Giustine’s ground out moved the runners to second and third, but Bob Elliott flied to left to end the threat. That began a string of 12 consecutive batters retired that didn’t come to an end until Bily Cox doubled with one out in the fifth. Rowe set down the next seven batters before yielding a two-out single to Ralph Kiner in the seventh. Rowe then retired the next seven hitters to conclude the game.
The Phillies broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth off Pittsburgh starter Jack Hallett. Rowe’s home run made it 1-0 and John O’Neil singled. He then stole second and took third on Johnny Wyrostek’s fly to right. Dell Ennis’ deep fly to left plated O’Neil and gave Philadelphia a 2-0 lead.
The Phillies broke open the game in the sixth. Andy Seminick drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on Emil Verban’s sacrifice. Hallett then walked Rowe to put runners on first and second with one out and O’Neil drew the third free pass of the frame to load the bases. Wyrostek’s slow grounder to short advanced everyone 90 feet, with Seminick scoring to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead. Del Ennis then singled to left, scoring both runners to make it 5-0.
And the Philles added a couple of runs to round out the scoring in the eighth. O’Neil drew a leadoff walk and, one out later, advanced to third on Ennis’ double. McCormick then capped off his big day with his fifth hit, plating both runners to account for the final score.
Half of Rowe’s four starts this season have been shutouts, and by blanking the Pirates he has moved atop the National League leaderboard in ERA (1.42).
