CHANDLER TOSSES 4TH SHUTOUT OF SEASON

Yanks Right-Hander’s ERA is Zero

NEW YORK, May 12 (AP) – Spud Chandler tossed his fourth complete game shutout in six starts and still hasn’t allowed an earned run in 53 2/3 innings, leading New York past the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.  Chandler has allowed a single unearned run in his six starts this season, en route to a 6-0 record.  The victory over Boston—a three-hitter—was especially impressive as the Red Sox are the top-scoring team in the American League.

In addition to the three hits, Chandler issued one walk.  Only one Boston baserunner advanced as far as second base.

Red Sox reliever Mickey Harris allowed only six hits over eight innings, but absorbed the defeat, surrendering single runs to the Yankees in the third and sixth innings.

The Yankees scored the only tally they would need when Chandler aided his own cause with a lead-off triple to left-center.  Snuffy Stirnweiss’ fly to center was deep enough to plate Chandler for a 1-0 New York lead.

The Yankees picked up an insurance run in the sixth.  Nick Etten led off with a walk and then was doubled to third by Bill Dickey and Phil Rizzuto was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Hank Majeski flied to shallow center for the first out, but Chandler’s ground ball to second was too slowly hit to turn a double play.  The fielder’s choice grounder forced Rizzuto at second, but Etten scored on the play for a 2-0 Yankees advantage.

That was more than enough for Chandler, who dominated the Red Sox throughout the contest.  Chandler, who tossed a no-hitter against Washington on April 21, allowed a single, unearned run in his third start of the season, a 13-1 blowout of the Senators at Griffith Stadium on April 27.  Since then, Chandler has rattled of 26 2/3 innings of scoreless ball.
