ROWE, PHILS OUTLAST BOROWY, CUBS IN 11
Double Perfect Game Last into Bottom of 6th
CHICAGO, May 5 (AP) – Schoolboy Rowe tossed a four-hit, 11-inning shutout and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Chicago Cubs 3-0 at Wrigley Field in the first game of a doubleheader. Cubs starter Hank Borowy took a perfect game into the seventh inning, a no-hitter into the eighth and a shutout into the 11th, but was the hard luck loser. In fact, the game featured a double perfect game until Borowy singled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
The game went on without a single baserunner until Borowy’s base hit. The Borowy bid for a perfect game came to an end when Johnny Wyrostek reached with one out in the top of the seventh on an error charged to Chicago shortstop Billy Jurges. The Phillies finally picked up a hit when Andy Seminick singled with two outs in the top of the eighth.
The first decent scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the seventh when, with two outs, Phil Cavaretta tripled off the center field wall, but Rowe kept the Cubs scoreless when he retired Andy Pafko on a grounder to second.
Jurges singled with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but Borowy fanned to end the inning.
Both starters worked perfect halves of the ninth inning, but the Phillies had a shot to break out on top in the 10th when Jimmy Wasdell tripled to right-center with two outs. Pete Novikoff pinch hit for Roy Hughes, but lined to Jurges for the third out.
Cavaretta led off the bottom of the 10th by grounding a single to left, but Rowe stiffened, striking out pinch hitter Charlie Gilbert, retiring Bill Nicholson on a fly to center and fanning Clyde McCullough to end the inning.
In the 11th, Borowy retired Seminick on a ground ball to short, but Emil Verban lined a base hit through the box. Rowe hit for himself and vindicated that decision by bouncing a base hit to right, advancing Verban to third. The Cubs appeared poised to dodge a huge bullet when Skeeter Newsome grounded to a drawn-in Al Glossup at second. Glossup gunned Vergan down at the plate for the second out, leaving runners on first and second. But Wyrostek dropped a single in front of Nicholson in right. The throw to the plate, in an attempt to cut down Rowe trying to score, was wild. Not only did Rowe break the scoreless tie, but Newsome came around to score as well, with Wyrostek ending up at third. Del Ennis followed with a double to the left-center field gap, plating Wyrostek with the third run before Frank McCormick grounded out to end the inning.
The Cubs came up in the bottom of the inning trailing the Phillies by three runs and Rowe didn’t mess around. He struck out Jurges, got pinch hitter Dom Dallessandro on a soft roller to short and fanned Peanuts Lowrey to end the game.
The exceptional effort by Rowe represents the first time thus far this season that a major league hurler has thrown an extra inning shutout. It was also the first time during this major league season that a game of any length ended without a single base on balls.
