BEVENS TOSSES 2-HIITER, YANKS BATS POUND A’S
Henrich Drives in 4; Joe D Homers
NEW YORK, Apr. 22 (AP) – One day after Spud Chandler tossed a no-hitter against the Washington Senators, Bill Bevens fired a two-hit complete game shutout as the New York Yankees stormed past the Philadelphia Athletics 16-0 at Yankee Stadium. Tommy Herich had three hits and drove in four runs and Joe DiMaggio hit his third home run of the season for New York, all part of a 15-hit attack. Nick Etten had three hits and drove in three runs and Oscar Grimes added three safeties in support of the Yankees’ attack. A’s pitchers contributed to their own demise by issuing ten walks to New York batters in just eight innings.
Bevens, making his first start of the season, allowed just two singles and walked three while striking out two.
The A’s are now 0-7 on the young season.
The Yankees scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the first. Joe Gordon drew a leadoff walk, took second on Snuffy Stirwneiss’ sacrifice, and scored on Henrich’s base hit. New York doubled its lead in the second when Stirnweiss tripled with one out and scored on Henrich’s fly out to right. The Yankees made it 3-0 in the fourth when Charlie Keller drew a leadoff free pass from Senators starter Lou Knerr and later came home on Grimes’ single.
New York then blew the game open with a six-run fifth inning, sending 11 men to the plate. Keller, Etten, Grimes and Stirnweiss all contributed run-scoring hits. DiMaggio’s two-run shot into the left field grandstand was the headline play in the three-run New York sixth, and the Yankees added four more runs in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Bevens, meanwhile, was close to flawless. He held Philadelphia hitless until George Kell singled with one out in the fifth. Hal Peck added a two-out base hit in the eighth, but the Senators never advanced a baserunner past second in the entire game.
