CHANDLER FIRES SEASON’S INAUGURAL NO-HITTER
Heinrich, Keller Drive in 3 Each as Yanks Roll Nats
NEW YORK, Apr. 21 (AP) – Spud Chandler tossed the season’s first no-hitter, leading New York to an 8-0 victory over the Washington Senators at Yankee Stadium. Chandler issued a pair of walks, and a Joe Gordon error allowed another batter to reach, but the Senators never came particularly close to securing a safety at any point during the contest.
Chandler’s teammates took whatever pressure he might have been feeling off his shoulders relatively early in the game. With no score in the middle of the third inning, the Yankees seized control against Washington starter Roger Wolff. Wolff retired Oscar Grimes and Chandler without incident, but then issued a two-out walk to Gordon. Snuffy Stirnweiss followed with a base hit through the box and Gordon advanced to third. Tommy Henrich then drilled an 0-1 offering into the right field bleachers, giving New York a 3-0 lead.
That was still the score when the Yankees broke the game open in the fifth. Grimes led off with a base hit and Chandler sacrificed him to second. Gordon then grounded a single to left, scoring Grimes to make it 4-0. Stirnweiss and Henrich both walked, lading the bases. Joe DiMaggio rolled into a fielder’s choice, with Henrich forced at second, but Gordon scored the game’s fifth run. Charlie Keller then lined a single to right, plating Stirnweiss. Max Wilson replaced Wolff and avoided further damage, but New York now held a commanding 6-0 advantage. Keller’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh capped the scoring.
Chandler was in complete command throughout. After a 1-2-3 first, he walked Joe Kuhel to lead off the second, but immediately erased the baserunner when Cecil Travis was induced to ground into a double play. That began a string of 12 consecutive Senators retired before snapped the string when Jake Early drew a one-out walk in the sixth. Early never advanced past first base. Neither did any other Washington player at any point in the game.
Kuhel became the final Senator to reach base when Yankees second baseman Gordon booted his two-out grounder in the seventh. Chandler merely shrugged, and then fanned Travis to end the inning. It was the first of seven straight batters he retired to end the game.
