AL SQUEEZES PAST NL IN ALL-STAR PITCHERS DUEL
Goslin Drives Home Knickerbocker with Game's Lone Run
NEW YORK, July 10 (AP) - In a contest completely antithetical to the season thus
far, the American League slipped past the National League in a classic pitcher's
duel to win the 1934 Major League Baseball All-Star Game before a sellout crowd
at the Polo Grounds. Detroit's Goose Goslin delivered a two-out base hit
off Hal Schumacher of the host New York Giants in the top of the sixth inning,
scoring Cleveland's Bill Knickerbocker to account for the 1-0 final score.
A total of only nine hits were amassed in the contest, none of them for extra
bases, a combination of events that took place only once in the 599 games played
during the first half of the regular season (on May 19, when the Giants defeated
the Reds 1-0, also at the Polo Grounds).
The starting pitchers set the tone for the day's events. AL starter Lefty
Gomez of the New York Yankees allowed a pair of singles and a walk but held the
NL scoreless in three innings of work. His counterpart, Dizzy Dean of the
St. Louis Cardinals, retired the first nine American Leaguers he faced before
finally succumbing to a base hit off the bat of Luke Appling of the Chicago
White Sox leading off the fourth. Given the tenor of the contest, it was
only appropriate that Gomez and Dean shared game MVP honors.
The NL had the first baserunner in scoring position. Paul Waner of
Pittsburgh singled with one out in the bottom of the second and, after a fly
out, moved to second when the Chicago Cubs' Woody English reached on an infield
single. But Gomez stranded the runners when he induced Al Todd of the
Philadelphia Phillies to ground softly to first to end the inning.
The AL had an excellent chance to break on top in the fourth. Appling's
single ended Dean's day; he was replaced on the mound by the Giants' Carl
Hubbell, who induced Detroit's Charlie Gehringer to ground into a fielder's
choice, forcing Appling at second for the first out. But Cleveland's Earl
Averill singled to right and Gehringer raced around to third, giving the
American League runners on the corner's with just one out. But Hubbell
rose to the occasion, making a great pitch on Lou Gehrig of the Yankees and
forcing a soft line drive back to the mound for the second out. Hubbell
preserved the scoreless tie when he retired Bob Johnson of the Philadelphia
Athletics on a grounder to second to end the frame.
The NL had another scoring chance in the fifth. Facing Detroit's Schoolboy
Rowe, Arky Vaughan of Pittsburgh led off with a base hit. But Rowe induced
three consecutive ground balls to keep the NL off the board.
The American League finally broke through in the sixth. Schumacher walked
Washington's Buddy Myer, who was pinch hitting for Appling, to lead-off the
inning. Knickerbocker, hitting for Gehringer, rolled into a fielder's
choice, forcing Myer at second. Cleveland's Hal Trosky fouled out but Roy
Johnson of the Boston Red Sox reached on a swinging bunt infield single to put
runners on first and second with two outs. Goslin then bounced a single
through the box, scoring Knickerbocker and chasing Johnson to third before
Schumacher closed the inning by retiring Sam West of the St. Louis Browns on a
pop to first.
AL relievers Firpo Marberry (Detroit) and Mel Harder (Cleveland) kept the NL
scoreless through the eighth while Schumacher and Lon Warneke (Chicago Cubs)
held the AL off the board through the ninth.
Tommy Bridges of Detroit came on for the American League to try to close out the
win in the bottom of the ninth but the Brooklyn Dodgers' Len Koenecke lined a
lead-off single to right. Joe Medwick of the Cardinals filed to right for
the first out and his teammate, Ripper Collins, came on as a pinch hitter and
flied to West in deep center for out number two. The game appeared to be
over when the third consecutive Cardinals batter, Pepper Martin, grounded to
Knickerbocker, but the shortstop booted the ball for the game's first error,
putting runners on first and second. Bridges, however, was unflappable, as
he induced another grounder to short, this one off the bat of Billy Urbanski of
the Boston Braves. Knickerbocker handled this chance cleanly, flipping to
Myer at second for the force on Martin to end the contest.
The All-Star Game concluded with the same final score as only 11 of the nearly
600 first half regular season contests: 1-0.
