BRAVES BELT 7 HRS, SWEEP SEASON-ENDING DH
Phils Walters Fans 11 in Debut as Starter
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 30 (AP) - The Boston Braves hit seven home runs en route to
a doubleheader sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies at the Baker Bowl on the final
day of the regular season. Wally Berger and Shanty Hogan each hit a pair
of long balls in the opener and Tommy Thompson added a roundtripper as well,
giving the Braves five home runs in a single game, tied for the high mark in a
major league contest this year as Boston won, 12-3. Joe Mowry and Billy
Urbanski did the honors for the Braves in the nightcap, a 4-0 Boston victory.
Though he was tagged with the loss, Phillies starter Bucky Walters--the club's
starting third baseman for most of the last two months--struck out 11 batters in
his debut as a starting pitcher. It was only the fifth time this year that
a pitcher has reached double figures in strikeouts in a game. Only Paul
Dean of the St. Louis Cardinals fanned more batters in a contest this year than
Walters managed in his only start.
The Braves jumped all over Philadelphia starter Syl Johnson in the opener,
taking a 6-0 lead through 2 1/2 innings. Urbanski and Pinky Whitney
combined to drive in three runs in the first inning and lead-off home runs in
the second (Hogan) and third (Berger) were the big blows accounting for three
more tallies.
The Phillies pushed back with two runs in the bottom of the third with Johnny
Moore and Dolph Camilli accounting for the RBIs but Hogan and Berger again
homered in the sixth and seventh innings respectively, driving home three more
runs.
Philadelphia got a run in the eighth but Thompson's two-run homer and Urbanski's
RBI double in the ninth capped the scoring for the Braves.
In the nightcap, starter Flint Rhem scuffled a bit, but ultimately gave Boston
six shutout frames of work and Bob Smith and Ed Cantwell combined to toss three
innings of scoreless relief. Mowry led off the game with a home run and
then doubled home another run in the third before Urbanski brought him home with
his sixth home run of the season.
Walters struggled a bit early but held the Braves at bay after the three-run
third and seemed to get stronger as the game wore on. After yielding the
Urbanski homer Walters retired 16 consecutive batters before ultimately being
replaced by Cy Moore in the eighth inning. Moore's only blemish was a walk
to Hal Lee leading off the ninth, but a double play ball off the bat of Randy
Moore wiped the slate clean.
The Phillies left the bases loaded in the second inning and put at least two men
on base in four of the six innings that Rhem worked, but they couldn't break
through and they never advanced a runner past first after the sixth inning.
The Braves finish the season tied for fifth place with the Brooklyn
Dodgers. The Phillies find themselves in seventh place, ahead of only the
Cincinnati Reds in the National League standings.
