HARDER WINS PITCHERS DUEL WITH TIETJE
Tribe, ChiSox Combine for Season-Tying Low 5 Hits

CLEVELAND, Sept. 29 (AP) - Mel Harder became the first pitcher in the major leagues this season with multiple two-hit shutouts as the Cleveland Indians eked past the Chicago White Sox 2-0 at League Park.  While the White Sox were held to just two hits the Indians managed only three safeties of their own.  The combined total of five hits in the entire game match the low mark of the year, initially set by the White Sox and St. Louis Browns in Chicago's 1-0 victory on April 22 at Comiskey Park.

19 different big league hurlers have allowed two hits or fewer in a complete game this year, but Harder is the only one to have accomplished the feat more than once.  The first occurrence--an 8-0 one-hit whitewashing of the Washington Senators at League Park on July 14--culminated in Harder's 11th win of the season.  Today's blanking of the White Sox is the right-hander's 23rd victory of the year, his fourth shutout and his 17th complete game.

Chicago starter Les Tietje was nearly as effective as Harder.  In fact, for the first seven innings, he was arguably more effective.  Tietje no-hit Cleveland for seven innings, becoming just the third major leaguer this season to carry a no-hitter into the eighth inning.  After walking Joe Vosmik leading off the second inning, Tietje retired the next 17 batters he faced before issuing another free pass, again to Vosmik, with two outs in the seventh.  But Odell Hale followed by hitting into a fielder's choice, forcing Vosmik at second to end the inning.

Harder yielded a lead-off double to Zeke Bonura in the top of the second but easily retired the next three batters to avoid damage.  That was the only hit the White Sox managed until the seventh when Luke Appling roped a one-out two-bagger off the right field wall.  Rip Radcliff's soft grounder to short allowed Appling to reach third with two outs and Marty Hopkins followed with a rocket to right field but was robbed of extra bases by Milt Galatzer who made a diving catch just short of the wall to keep the scoreless duel intact.

The Indians finally broke through in the eighth.  Johnny Burnett slashed a double off the glove of third baseman Hopkins to open the frame.  Bill Knickerbocker flied to center for the first out but the ball was deep enough to allow Hopkins to tag and advance to third.  With the infield in, Bill Brenzel then lined a clean single to center, scoring Burnett with the game's first run.  Eddie Moore came on to run for Brenzel and Joe Heving replaced Tietje, who was pitching on short rest.  Harder sacrificed Moore to second and a wild pitch moved the runner to third.  Pinch hitter Bob Seeds then grounded a single to right, scoring Moore and giving Cleveland a 2-0 lead.

Harder retired the White Sox in order in the ninth, ending the game having set down eight in a row and 14 of the last 15 batters he faced.
