CUYLER'S CYCLE HIGHLIGHTS CUBS 'W'
Bucs Late Rally Falls Short
CHICAGO, Sept. 27 (AP) - Kiki Cuyler became the sixth major league player this
season--and the first in three months--to hit for the cycle as the Chicago Cubs
downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-7 at Wrigley Field. It was the second time
this year that a Pirates-Cubs game featured a player hitting for the cycle;
Pittsburgh's Gus Suhr accomplished the feat on May 2 in a 9-6 Chicago victory at
Forbes Field.
Cuyler doubled in the first off Pirates starter Ralph Birkhofer, tripled in the
fourth, singled off reliever Bill Swift in the sixth and homered in the seventh
to complete the circuit.
The game started off innocently enough, remaining scoreless until the Cubs
seized a lead they would never surrender in the bottom of the fourth.
Cuyler's triple opened the frame, and he scored on Chuck Klein's deep fly out to
center field. Phil Cavarretta and Tuck Stainback followed with consecutive
singles, putting runners on first and third with one out and Bob O'Farrell's
fielder's choice grounder plated Cavarretta to give Chicago a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Cubs appeared to break the game open. Stan Hack's triple
to right started things off and Augie Galan's base hit scored Hack to make it
3-0. Cuyler was the first batter Swift faced and his base hit put runners
on first and second. Klein's fielder's choice forced Cuyler and left
runners on the corners with one out. Cavarretta was hit by a pitch,
loading the bases, and Stainback followed with a two-run single, giving the Cubs
a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Pirates nicked Chicago starter Guy Bush for a run in the top of the sixth
but the Cubs appeared to effectively put the game away with a pair of tallies in
the bottom of the inning when Galan drew a two-out walk and Cuyler followed with
a blast that landed in the left field bleachers. Another Chicago run in
the seventh made it 8-1.
The run that Pittsburgh scored in the top of the eighth appeared to be of the
consolation variety, but events in the ninth painted a different picture.
Charlie Root was asked to mop up for the Cubs but was treated rudely by the
Pirates. Earl Grace led off with a base hit and pinch hitter Freddie
Lindstrom roped a double off the left-center field wall, putting runners on
second and third. Lloyd Waner walked to fill the bases and Woody Jensen
singled to center, scoring Grace to make it 8-3 with the bases still
loaded. With the tying run now standing in the on deck circle and Root
having failed to retire a single batter, Chicago manager Charlie Grimm summoned
Pat Malone into the game and he recorded the first out of the inning when he
retired Paul Waner on a fly to right. Lindstrom scored on the play and
Lloyd Waner moved to third. Arky Vaughn then cracked a double to the gap
in left-center, scoring Lloyd Waner and advancing Jensen to third. It was
now 8-5. Pie Traynor's base hit scored Jensen to make it 8-6.
Pittsburgh now had runners on first and third and one out and Suhr's ground out
to first made it 8-7 when Jensen scored and moved the potential tying run, in
the form of Traynor, into scoring position. But Malone finally ended the
rally when he retired Cookie Lavagetto on a fly to center.
