REDBIRDS CLINCH SHARE OF NL PENNANT
Paul Dean Dazzles Bucs
ST. LOUIS, Sept. 26 (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals clinched a share of the
National League flag with a 4-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Sportsman's
Park. Cardinals starter Paul Dean fired a four-hit shutout, his second
whitewash of the season, continuing an exceptional stretch of pitching for St.
Louis. The win was the fifth in a row for the Cardinals and the shutout
was the club's third in the last four games. In their last 11 contests,
St. Louis has allowed more than two runs only once.
If the New York Giants fall at home to the Philadelphia Phillies today, the
Cardinals will be the National League's representative in the forthcoming World
Series. The Detroit Tigers, the American League champions, clinched the
American League pennant three days ago.
The Cardinals seized control of the game in the first inning, jumping on Pirates
starter Waite Hoyt for three runs. Pepper Martin led off with a base hit
and stole his league leading 23rd base of the season. Jack Rothrock drew a
walk, putting runners on first and second. After Frankie Frisch fouled
out, Joe Medwick blooped a double just inside the right field line, scoring
Martin with the game's first run and advancing Rothrock to third. Ripper
Collins followed with a deep fly that center fielder Lloyd Waner caught, but
Rothrock trotted home with the frame's second run and Medwick moved to
third. Bill DeLancey then lined a single to right, plating Collins for a
3-0 lead.
St. Louis added a run in the third. Collins led off with a walk and
advanced to second one out later on Ernie Orsatti's ground out. Leo
Durocher's sharp grounder found a hole on the left side of the infield and
Collins scored to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead.
Hoyt found something of a groove from that point on, holding St. Louis scoreless
the rest of the way before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the eighth,
retiring the last eight batters he faced in the process. But it didn't
matter. Dean completely shut the Pirates down throughout the game.
Only one Pittsburgh runner advanced beyond first base; Earl Grace led off the
third with a double, moved to third on Hoyt's grounder but was stranded when
Lloyd Waner flied to shallow center and Woody Jensen grounded to third.
The Pirates never had anything resembling a scoring threat the rest of the
contest. After Gus Suhr led off the fifth with a single, Dean retired the
next 14 batters consecutively before yielding a two-out ninth inning single to
Paul Waner. He then retired Arky Vaughn on a soft liner to second to close
out the game for his 17th victory of the year.
