MARCUM STYMIES NATS IN DH OPENER
Johnson Belts 33rd HR in A's 'W'
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 24 (AP) - Johnny Marcum became the first Athletics starter,
and only the 19th major league hurler, to allow fewer than three hits in a
complete game, leading Philadelphia past the Washington Senators 6-0 at Shibe
Park. It was just the fifth A's complete game shutout of the season;
Marcum has three of those whitewashings, two of them at the hands of the
Senators.
Marcum allowed only one Washington baserunner to reach second base and retired
the final 13 hitters he faced.
The A's broke on top in the bottom of the first on Bob Johnson's 33rd home run
of the season; the solo shot put Philadelphia ahead, 1-0. The A's then
touched Washington starter Reese Diggs for three runs in the second. With
one out, Eric McNair grounded a single to right, and Lou Finney followed with a
base hit, advancing McNair to second. Frankliin Hayes' soft grounder to
short advanced the runners to second and third with two outs. A Diggs wild
pitch plated McNair for a 2-0 Philadelphia lead. Marcum then lofted a
routine fly ball to center field that Jake Powell botched for a two-base error,
scoring Finney with the third A's run. A visibly frustrated Diggs walked
Doc Cramer on four pitches and then surrendered a single to left off the bat of
Dib Williams that scored Marcum to make it 4-1. Johnson followed by flying
out to finally end the inning.
The A's capped the scoring in the fifth. Cramer led off with a triple and
scored one out later on Johnson's double to left. Foxx and Pinky Higgins
drew consecutive walks to load the bases and Diggs' second wild pitch of the
game scored Cramer with the sixth run of the contest for Philadelphia.
The game featured a grand total of only eight hits between the two teams but
Diggs walked four batters in five innings, which greatly hurt his cause.
