DUELING SHUTOUTS; CARDS, BRAVES SPLIT DH WITH PAIR OF 1-0 SCORES
Redbirds Continue to Search for Bats; Frankhouse Extends Shutout Streak
BOSTON, Sept. 20 (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Braves split a
doubleheader at Braves Field with each game ending with a 1-0 score; the
Cardinals won the opener behind Tex Carleton's shutout while the Braves
prevailed in the nightcap led by the impeccable Fred Frankhouse.
The Cardinals managed to extend their National League lead to 3 1/2 games as a
function of Cincinnati's 9-3 pounding of the New York Giants and Carl Hubbell at
the Polo Grounds. Jim Bottomely homered twice for the Reds and went
back-to-back with Chick Hafey in the third inning, knocking Giants ace Hubbell
out of the game. Gordon Slade also homered for Cincinnati, who went deep
four times in a contest for the second time in the series. The St. Louis
magic number is now seven.
Despite gaining ground in the pennant race, the Cardinals--the NL's top scoring
club--have seen their offense disappear recently. The nightcap represented
the second time in as many days that the Cardinals have been shutout by
Frankhouse and it's the third time in the last four games that the Cardinals
have been held scoreless. Hubbell blanked them in the second game of a
doubleheader on September 16 and they lost the opener 4-1. In all, over
their last five games, the Cardinals have scored a grand total of two
runs. St. Louis has now been shutout four times since September 9, a span
of 12 games. In their previous 131 games the Cardinals had been blanked
only twice.
In the opener, Carleton dueled with Ed Brandt of the Braves. The game's
only run game in the top of the first inning and it was unearned. Pepper
Martin led off by drawing a walk and then stole second base. Al Spohrer's
throw ended up in center field and the error allowed Martin to take third.
Jack Rothrock's grounder to short scored Martin and the Cardinals led 1-0.
St. Louis had a chance to add to its lead in the fourth when Ripper Collins drew
a lead-off walk from Brandt and Spud Davis singled him to second. Chick
Fullis sacrificed the runners to second and third, but Leo Durocher popped to
the mound and Carleton grounded out to end the inning.
The Braves had a decent scoring chance in the sixth. Billy Urbanski
reached base leading off on Frankie Frisch's error and Les Mallon bunted him
into scoring position. Buck Jordan walked, putting runners on first and
second, but Wally Berger flied to left and Hal Lee fouled to third to end the
threat.
The Cardinals never managed to advance a runner into scoring position after the
fifth inning and Brandt retired the final 11 batters he faced.
But Carleton was stalwart. Brandt reached base to open the eighth on
Durocher's miscue and moved to second on Urbanski's sacrifice. But Mallon
and Jordan were easily retired. In the ninth, Lee doubled with one
out--the only extra base hit of the entire game. But Carleton retired
Tommy Thompson and Marty McManus on ground balls to end the contest.
In the nightcap, Frankhouse and Bill Walker matched zeroes into the ninth
inning. The Cardinals actually had a chance to score first in the third
inning. Ernie Orsatti led off with a base hit and moved to second on
Durocher's ground out. Walker struck out, but Martin's infield single put
runners on the corners with two outs. But Rothrock--who is hitless in the
series--flied to center to end the inning.
Frankhouse retired 10 in a row before yielding a single to Frisch leading off
the seventh. A wild pitch moved the runner to second, but Joe Medwick
struck out and Collins tapped back to the mound. Bill DeLancey drew
Frankhouse's only walk of the game, but Orsatti grounded to second to end the
threat. Frankhouse retired the final seven hitters he faced.
Walker, meanwhile, never let a baserunner advance past second through eight
innings, scattering seven hits and a walk in the process. He retired
Jordan leading off the bottom of the ninth in a scoreless game, bringing Berger
to the plate. The Boston center fielder was 2-for-3, with a single and a
double to his credit and was the only player on either team with more than one
hit; his double was the only extra base hit of the game to that point. The
first pitch from Walker was a fastball and Berger didn't miss it, driving it
over the left field wall for his 24th home run of the year to win the game for
Boston.
The shutout is the third in a row for Frankhouse, making him the first major
league player this season to accomplish this feat. His scoreless innings
streak now stands at 28 1/3 innings, tying him with Benny Frey of the Reds for
the longest such skein of the year.
