LYONS' ARM, BAT EARN CHISOX DH SPLIT WITH A'S
Sox Starter Hits Game-Winning HR in 11th

CHICAGO, Sept. 19 (AP) - Ted Lyons allowed two runs in 11 innings of work and won the game with his bat by hitting a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the 11th of the nightcap as the Chicago White Sox split a doubleheader with the Philadelphia Athletics.  Philadelphia won the opener 9-3 as Bob Johnson, Jimmie Foxx and Pinky Higgins all homered.

Both Lyons and A's starter John Cascarella were credited with complete games in the nightcap.  It was the sixth time in the major leagues this season that both starting pitchers tossed complete games in a contest that reached the 11th inning or beyond.  There have been 20 home runs that have ended games in the big leagues thus far this season; Lyons is the only pitcher to have accomplished the feat.

Neither club scored until the fourth inning, when the White Sox broke out on top with substantial assistance from the leaky A's defense.  With one out, Luke Appling doubled to right-center field.  Rip Radcliff followed by grounding to Pinky Higgins at third whose toss to first was far over the head of Jimmie Foxx.  The two-base throwing error allowed Appling to score the first run of the game.  Jackie Hayes followed with a routine grounder to second, advancing Radcliff to third.  George Caithamer then grounded a single past Cascarella into center field, scoring Hayes to make it 2-0.

The Higgins miscue was just one of five Philadelphia errors in the game.  Remarkably, the A's had been charged with three errors in the bottom of the first inning alone but, somehow, the White Sox failed to score a single run in the frame.

Lyons held the A's scoreless until the seventh but Philadelphia was able to break through and tie the game.  Dib Williams drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on Bob Johnson's ground out.  Foxx grounded to short with the runner holding but Higgins partly atoned for his earlier error by ripping a two-out triple off the right-center field wall, scoring Williams to cut the Chicago lead to 2-1.  Eric McNair then came through with a game-tying single to left to tie the score.

Lyons pitched around a one-out double off the bat of his counterpart, Cascarella, in the eighth and then, in the top of the ninth, the A's managed three hits and failed to score.  Foxx singled with one out but was thrown out trying to steal second.  Higgins and McNair followed with back-to-back base hits but Lou Finney flied to left to end the threat.

The White Sox had a chance to win the game in the tenth when Al Simmons led off with a walk and advanced to second on Jimmy Dykes' sacrifice.  Appling drew another free pass from Cascarella to put runners on first and second but Radcliff's double play grounder snuffed out the threat.

After Lyons dismissed the A's in order in the top of the 11th, Cascarella retired Hayes to open the bottom half of the inning.  But Caithamer singled, bringing Lyons to the plate.  Manager Dykes, who has used Lyons as a pinch hitter 19 times this year, more than any player on the club, let his starting pitcher bat for himself.  On the very first pitch from Cascarella, Lyons deposited the ball into the lower grandstand in right field, winning the game.  It was his first home run of the season.
