FRANKHOUSE TOPS DEAN, CARDS WITH 2ND STRAIGHT SHUTOUT
St. Louis Lead Falls to 3 Games
BOSTON, Sept. 19 (AP) - Fred Frankhouse fired a complete game three-hit shutout and the Boston Braves topped Dizzy Dean and the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0 at Braves Field. It was the second straight shutout for Frankhouse, who took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before settling for a one-hit blanking of the Cincinnati Reds on September 14.
Frankhouse and Dean were both brilliant; neither allowed an extra base hit as they combined to surrender only seven singles and issue four walks in the entire contest. Frankhouse didn't allow a St. Louis baserunner past first base and didn't surrender a hit after Frankie Frisch led off the fourth with a single. After the Frisch base hit, Frankhouse retired 10 consecutive Cardinals, then issued a walk--the only free pass he allowed in the entire game--to Ripper Collins with two outs in the seventh. He then set down the final seven batters he faced to end the contest.
The game's only run came in the third inning. Billy Urbanski drew a one-out walk from Dean and advanced to third on a Marty McManus single through the box. Randy Moore's fly ball to center was deep enough to allow Urbanski to tag and score to give the Braves a 1-0 lead that would never change.
Boston didn't advance another baserunner past first until the bottom of the eighth when, with one down, Urbanski reached on second baseman Frisch's error and then took third one out later on Moore's base hit. But Dean retired Wally Berger on a ground ball to end the inning.
The Cardinals' loss reduces their first place lead over the New York Giants to three games. The Giants extended their winning streak to five when pinch hitter Lefty O'Doul singled home Blondy Ryan with the tie-breaking run in the bottom of the ninth to give New York a 2-1 victory over Cincinnati at the Polo Grounds. Slim Parmalee--with relief help from Dolph Luque--out-dueled Beryl Richmond of the Reds to pick up the victory for the Giants.
