GIANTS SWEEP DH FROM REDS, NOW 4 BEHIND CARDS
Schumacher 3rd Giants Hurler to Reach 20 Wins
NEW YORK, Sept. 18 (AP) - The New York Giants swept a doubleheader from the
Cincinnati Reds at the Polo Grounds, extending their win streak to five in a
row, and pulling within four games of the idle first place St. Louis Cardinals
in the process. While the task of catching the Cardinals remains a tall
one--the Giants trail by six in the loss column and have only ten games
remaining--New York's never-say-die attitude was reflected throughout the
twinbill.
In the opener, Freddie Fitzsimmons pitched a complete game four-hitter en route
to his 21st win of the season as New York eked out a 2-1 victory over the Reds
in a game that took only 86 minutes to finish. Reds starter Benny
Frey--who allowed only two runs in seven innings--was the hard luck loser.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Mel Ott singled with
one out and was subsequently forced at second on Hank Leiber's fielder's choice
grounder. Leiber stole second and scored on Johnny Vergez's base hit to
center.
The Giants made it 2-0 in the fifth. Fitzsimmons singled with one out and
advanced to second on Jo-Jo Moore's roller to third. Hughie Critz then
dumped a single into right, scoring Fitzsimmons to give New York a 2-0 lead.
Fitzsimmons held the Reds scoreless until the seventh. Jim Bottomley
opened the frame by drawing a four-pitch walk and he advanced to third on Chick
Hafey's base hit to right-center. Harlin Pool followed with a double play
grounder, scoring Bottomley to cut the New York lead to 2-1.
Cincinnati came within a whisker of tying the game in the eighth. Sparky
Adams singled to right with one out and, after Gordon Slade flied out, advanced
to second on a Fitzsimmons wild pitch. Koenig then dropped a base hit into
center field. Adams tried to score but Ott gunned him down at the plate
for the third out.
The Reds had one more chance in the ninth when Hafey drew a one-out free pass
but Fitzsimmons retired Pool and Ernie Lombardi to close out the game.
The nightcap was a high-scoring affair, with the Giants ultimately coming out on
top 10-7.
Each team scored a first inning run. The Reds got theirs when Slade tagged
and scored from third on Bottomley's long fly to center. The Giants
countered when Moore led off the bottom of the first with his 14th home run of
the season. Cincinnati starter Tony Freitas was the victim.
New York appeared to seize firm control of the game with four runs in the bottom
of the second. Concsecutive one-out doubles off the bats of Gus Mancuso
and Vergez brought in the first run. Third baseman Koenig kicked Blondy
Ryan's grounder to put runners on the corners and Giants pitcher Hal Schumacher
made it 3-1 when he banged out the third New York two-bagger of the
inning. Moore's base hit scored two more and the Giants held a seemingly
commanding 5-1 lead.
But the Reds roared back with three in the top of the third, doing all of the
damage with two outs. Slade's fourth home run of the season made it 5-2
and Keonig followed with a single. Bottomley then brought Cincinnati to
within a single run with a home run of his own. It was only the second
time this season that the Reds had managed a multi-home run innnig. (The
other occasion was in the fourth inning on July 2, also against the Giants at
the Polo Grounds.)
The Reds tied the game in the fourth when Pool led off with his fourth home run
of the year.
The Giants reclaimed the lead in the sixth. With one out, Ryan singled and
advanced to second on Schumacher's second double of the game. Moore then
singled to center, scoring both runners for a 7-5 New York lead.
The Reds edged closer when pinch hitter Frank McCormick led off the top of the
seventh with a triple and scored when Mancuso was charged with a passed ball.
The Giants got the run back and then some in the bottom of the inning when Ott
and pinch hitter Lefty O'Doul singled with two outs and Vergez doubled both
runners home.
With reliever Al Smith on the hill in the top of the eighth, Hafey belted his
16th home run of the season with one out, cutting the deficit to 9-7. It
was only the third time all year that the Reds hit at least four home runs in a
single game. But the Giants got the run back in the home half of the frame
when, with two outs, Leiber tripled home Moore, who had led off with a single.
Reliever Joe Bowman closed out the game by retiring the Reds in order in the top
of the ninth.
Schumacher scuffled, but came out of the game with the victory. The Giants
now have three pitchers with at least 20 wins: Schumacher, Fitzsimmons,
who won the opener, and Carl Hubbell.
The loss was the eighth straight for Cincinnati and their 102nd defeat of the
year. This is the third losing streak of the season of eight or more games
for the club. No other big league team has suffered more than two such
streaks.
