HUBBELL'S SHUTOUT CAPS GIANTS' SWEEP OF CARDS, DEANS
St. Louis Still Leads NL By 5 Games
NEW YORK, Sept. 16 (AP) - Carl Hubbell tossed his fourth complete game shutout
of the season, out-dueling Paul Dean, as the New York Giants completed a
doubleheader sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals with a 2-0 victory in the
nightcap. Hubbell also closed out the opener, securing the final three
outs in relief of Slim Parmelee as the Giants defeated the Cardinals and Dizzy
Dean, 4-1.
The doubleheader sweep allowed New York to win the final three games of the
four-game series with St. Louis after the Cardinals won the first contest behind
Paul Dean, 8-3. Joe Medwick and Ripper Collins both homered to lead the
Redbirds.
But the Giants came back to take the second game of the series in 11 innings on
Bill Terry's one-out bases loaded game-winning single.
In the doubleheader opener, the Giants roughed up Dizzy Dean with three runs in
the bottom of the first inning. Consecutive two-out doubles off the bats
of Travis Jackson and Hank Leiber gave New York the 3-0 advantage.
The Giants added a run in the third when Terry singled with one out and, two
batters later, scored on Leiber's base hit. It was a good thing the Giants
got to Dean early on because he shut them out the rest of the way, never
allowing another runner bast first base.
Parmelee tossed an outstanding game for New York, taking a shutout of his own
into the ninth inning. In fact, the Cardinals didn't get a baserunner
beyond second until the final frame. But Medwick led off the ninth for St.
Louis with his 23rd home run of the season and Collins followed by drawing a
walk. It was a game that the Giants couldn't afford to lose and manager
Terry, knowing this, had his doubleheader Game 2 starter, Hubbell, getting
ready. After the Collins walk, he pulled the trigger and replaced Parmelee.
Hubbell wasn't particularly sharp, but he was ultimately effective. He
retired pinch hitter Spud Davis on a fielder's choice, leaving a runner on first
with one out. Ernie Orsatti drew a walk, bringing the tying run to the
plate. Pinch hitter Chick Fullis flied to center for the second out but
Dizzy Dean hit for himself and drew a free pass, loading the bases. That
brought Pepper Martin to the plate and Hubbell induced him to fly to center
field to end the game.
In the nightcap, Hubbell and Paul Dean matched zeroes on the scoreboard into the
seventh inning, with neither starter allowing a baserunner to advance beyond
second. But the Cardinals appeared poised to break out on top when Medwick
tripled to the right field gap with one out in the otp of the frame. The
Giants brought the infield in and the tactic paid off when Collins grounded to
Jackson at short; Medwick had to hold and there were two outs in the
inning. Davis then grounded to third to end the threat.
In the bottom of the seventh, Ott led off with his league leading 39th home run
of the season, putting the Giants on top 1-0. Dean retired the next three
batters in order, two of them on strikes, but the deadlock had been broken.
St. Louis put together a threat in the eighth with some help from New
York. Fullis led off by reaching on Jackson's error. Orsatti pinch
hit for Leo Durocher but forced Fullis at second for the first out. Pinch
hitter Francis Healy struck out but Martin grounded a single to right with
Orsatti advancing to third. Hubbell walked Jack Rothrock on four pitches
to fill the bases but then got Frankie Frisch on a shallow fly to right to
escape damage.
The Giants picked up an insurance run off reliever Dazzy Vance in the bottom of
the inning. With two outs, Jo-Jo Moore doubled to left and Hughie Critz
came through with a single through the box, scoring Moore to make it 2-0.
Hubbell seemed, somewhat unsurprisingly, to be running out of gas in the ninth
but Terry stuck with him. Medwick led off with a single to center but a
double play ball off the bat of Collins swept the bases clear with two
outs. But Fullis and Davis lined back-to-back singles to put the tying
runs aboard and Burgess Whitehead beat out an infield roller to load the bags
for pinch hitter Bill DeLancey. Hubbell, however, rallied and got DeLancey
on a routine fly to Moore in center to end the game.
Despite being swept in the doubleheader and dropping three straight contests
overall, the Cardinals still lead the Giants by five games--six in the loss
column. St. Louis has a magic number of nine and New York will need plenty
of help to have any chance of catching the Cardinals in the final two weeks of
the season.
