FRANKHOUSE LOSES NO-HITTER IN 9TH
Settles for 1-Hit Shutout

BOSTON, Sept. 14 (AP) - Fred Frankhouse became the first major leaguer hurler to carry a no-hitter into the ninth inning, but surrendered a lead-off infield single to slow-footed Ernie Lombardi, foiling the bid.  Still, the right-hander retired the next three batters he faced and settled for a one-hit shutout as the Boston Braves defeated the Cincinnati Reds 6-0 at Braves Field.  Frankhouse joins Mel Harder of Cleveland and Van Lingle Mungo of Brooklyn as the only big league starters to toss a complete game one-hitter this year.  Frankhouse faced only 28 batters--one hitter above the minimum--in the contest, allowing only two baserunners:  the single to Lombardi and a walk issued to Sparky Adams leading off the fourth inning.

Reds starter Si Johnson matched scoreless innings with Frankhouse until the sixth inning when the Braves finally put together a rally and effectively broke the game open, with considerable help from the Cincinnati defense.  After Lee Mallon grounded out to open the frame, Buck Jordan reached first when third baseman Mark Koenig kicked his ground ball.  Wally Berger followed with his 23rd home run of the year and the Braves lead 2-0.  Hal Lee drew a four-pitch walk and Tommy Thompson--who was 4-for-4 in the game--singled Lee to second.  Pinky Whitney then hit a tailor made double play grounder to second baseman Adams who booted it to load the bases.  Al Spohrer flied to right, scoring Jordan and advancing Lee to third.  Frankhouse then bounced a single into center field, scoring Thompson for the fourth run of the inning before Billy Urbanski flied to right for the third out.

Boston scored twice more in the eighth.  Thompson led off with a single and advanced to second on Whitney's ground out.  Spohrer then dropped a single into left, with Thompson stopping at third.  Frankhouse followed by lining his third hit of the game into right field, scoring Thompson with the fifth run.  Urbanski's base hit capped the scoring, plating Spohrer.

Frankhouse, meanwhile, cruised throughout.  He retired the first nine batters he faced, issued the walk to Adams to open the fourth and then retired Gordon Slade on a fly to left and erased the baserunner by inducing Koenig to ground into an inning-ending double play.  After the walk, Frankhouse set down the next 14 Reds he faced.

With the crowd on its feet to begin the ninth, Frankhouse worked ahead of Lombardi 0-1 and then the Reds catcher topped a ball to the left of the mound.  Frankhouse couldn't reach it and shortstop Urbanski charged the ball, attempted a bare-handed pickup, and failed.  Lombardi was credited with a single, ending the no-hit bid.  But Frankhouse showed resolve, and retired Adam Comorosky on a soft liner to short, pinch hitter Frank McCormick on a fly to left and Adams on a fielder's choice grounder to third to end the game.
